Question about 2002 Suzuki XL-7

There is a loud ticking noise coming from the front of the engine on my 2004 XL7. It seems concentrated at the timing belt cover-any idea on the repair/replacement costs of the timing belt or tensioner?

Hi,yes your engine does have a timing belt inside,shoul cost from $150,00 to$ 250,00 to replace ,be sure you take it to a recogniced shop, to get it check ,and to have the work done,.may be something else making that .(.noise.) good luck......

run the engine and watch the belt pulleys, the one that jitters and moves up and down is the tensioner pulley, it is an arm with a pulley on the end, it is a very short arm.

The blower is located under the passenger side however, the screech in the engine are is most likely a lose belt. Tighten or replace your belts and teh sound should go away.

3.5L Engine

Remove or disconnect the following:

  1. Negative battery cable
  • Engine coolant
  • Water pump pulley bolts
  • Alternator bolt, loosen only
  • Water pump pulley and drive belts
  • Crankshaft pulley
  • Timing belt cover(s)
  1. Turn the crankshaft until the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and cylinder head are aligned.
  2. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt and turn the tensioner counterclockwise as far as it will go. Tighten the adjusting bolt.
  3. Mark the timing belt with an arrow showing direction of rotation.
  4. Remove the timing belt.
  5. If defective, remove the timing belt tensioner.

To install:
  1. If necessary, install the timing belt tensioner.
  2. Attach the top of the tensioner spring on the engine coolant pump pin. Ensure the hook on the pin is facing down and the hook on the tensioner is facing away from the engine
  3. Rotate the timing belt tensioner to the extreme counterclockwise position. Temporarily lock the tensioner in place.
  4. Align the timing marks of the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
  5. Install the timing belt on the crankshaft sprocket, then onto the rear camshaft sprocket.
  6. Route the belt to the coolant pump pulley, the front camshaft sprocket and the timing belt tensioner.
  7. Apply force counterclockwise to the rear camshaft sprocket with tension on the tight side of the belt and check that timing marks are aligned.
  8. Loosen the tensioner bolt 1–2 turns and tighten the timing belt to a tension of 57–84 lbs. (260–380 N).
  9. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise.
  10. Readjust the sprocket timing marks and tighten the tensioner bolts.
  11. Install the timing belt covers.
  12. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten to 108–116 ft. lbs. (150–160 Nm).
  13. Install or connect the following:
    • Timing belt cover(s)
    • Crankshaft pulley
    • A/C compressor belt
    • Water pump pulley
    • V belt
    • Negative battery cable
    • Engine with coolant

A slipping belt makes a loud squeaking noise when the engine is running. The belt needs to be changed if it is cracked or fraying on the side, or if it begins to slip.

Check serpentine belt for extreme wear or tear, also look at pully for obstruction. Could be slight valve tap or timing "belt or chain" slapping against the timing cover case, (whatever Suzuki uses).

Lifter may be worn or cam lobe is worn and is probably due a timing belt replacement as well.Sounds like just a high mileage problem lots of people complain of valve train noise from these engines its not uncommon. I would use a high mileage engine oil to help with the noise but i am afraid the noise is only going to get worse over time you may look into salvage engine with a warranty or having the engine rebuilt it sounds like it is already burning oil. The valve lash can be adjusted on this engine but if your not a mechanic i do not recommend this, it is very sensitive procedure and can damage the engine permanently. Take it to a shop have them check your valve lash and adjust it for the noise issue to save yourself some time and money on a very costly repair with improperly adjusted valve lash. Is that the noise you mean? Rough and loud? Yeah, it makes you wonder if the timing is off by a tooth or two, doesn't it?
There may be a viewing/access plug on the camshaft sprocket cover to see the cam sprocket timing mark, when the crankshaft is turned to TDC, or 0 degrees. If no plug or access to see the cam sprocket, it might be wise to re-check the timing. Is there any difficulty in starting the engine? Or does it seem to run warmer than normal? Was the belt tension set correctly? Just a few things to consider, good luck.

I have a knocking noise, that sounds like it is coming from the right side of the engine. I took it to the dealership and they told me the oil was low and that it should take care of the noise, it didn't....


TWO mechanics and they can't identify the problem, just throw parts at it? This could be caused by many things. If the noise occurs all the time, i.e. even when idling, that's something in the engine. Try this: using a LARGE (say 12" long) screwdriver, place the tip on the engine, and the handle on your ear. The screwdriver acts like a stethoscope. You may be able to locate the noise location more precisely. If the noise is a light ticking, that could be a worn or maladjusted tappet. If its a heavy and loud knock, its something more serious. Loose front pulley bolts, AC compressor failure, loose alternator bolts all come to mind. Look for a local expert on your make of car, obviously NOT the dealer.

The engine is an E 36 and the is a loud ticking noise coming from the right side front of the engine where the alum cover is in the front it goes away at some higher rpm's but is there on startup and idle...


Not sure of the motor. Assume you are talking about a BMW E36 (325, 358, 318 etc.) What you are probably describing is a valve tap. Sort of a ticking sound not a bang bang bang right? If this is the case you need to have your valves adjusted. Not really a job for a weekend warrior but a search on the car forums may let you decide if this is a job you want to tackle.

a very common problem with these engines is a clicking sound in the engine, it can be a slight annoying click, to a loud knocking sound. I end result is usually the same, replace your timing belt and tensioner. I researched this problem when i bought mine, and it was knocking. i replaced the timing belt, (which was loose) and actually took the tensioner apart and cleaned it (not recommended for the mechanically challenged). new tensioners may be tought to find. when i put it all back together, it ran smooth and quiet.
