Question about 1994 Mercury Topaz

1994 Topaz engine stalling

Hello I have a 1994 2.3L Mercury Topaz and while driving one day the car began to decelerate on me and eventually died. I first noticed this problem when driving the highway after running at about 65 MPH the car began to lose power and I basically had to floor it to maintain speed. I was able to limp the car home at about 10 MPH basically flooring the gas to keep it from stalling out. I replaced the fuel filter and PCV valve today but the car still continues to idle for a few minutes and then gradually lose RPM and stall out. If I tap on the accelerator the car stalls. Any help or suggestions you can provide would be very helpful.

Normally this kind of a problem is a fuel block...there so many other ways to block...other than the filter

I have a 1994 mercury sable station wagon. while sitting at a stop light the engine died. when we finally got it restarted it began to back fire alot. Then all of a sudden it began working fine and ran...

A solution is hard to give with out looking at and doing some testing but advise and help i can do, this sounds like a lack of fuel pressure, it died out and was hard to restart and backfiring from loss of fuel, this sounds to me like a fuel pump that is on the way out,

The first thing would be to have a fuel pressure gauge connected to fuel rail so that you can watch the pressure as you drive and see if you loose pressure when car begins to die out or back fire. good day

Mercury Topaz loses power while driving, and stalls out

Check fuel pressure. Sounds like a bad pump or plugged fuel filter.

My 94 topaz stalls out when i'm ideling?? Has anybody had this problem before or any suggestions???

DO THE FOLLOWING
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls at stops and low erratic idle speed and rough idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve (IAC for short), they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
