Question about 1994 Lincoln Continental

Having trouble replacing rear brake pads on a 1994 Lincoln Conntinental. Purchased a special tool to conpress the wheel cylinder. Left hand threads? Tried right handed and no luck. Please help!

The tool only turns in the parking brake adjuster
(clockwise)
You still have to push the piston in.

Open the bleeder valve
You have to flush the system on ALL
vehicles every 2 years anyway.

You must have the antilock brake unit bleed, that requires a special tool that holds the hydraulic pop- it valves open electrically. See the dealer or a well equipped brake shop.

How do I get the caliper to fit back over the new pads, those being obviously thicker because they are new. I can't figure out how to get the cylinder on the caliper compressed to fit over the new pads. My...


the pistons on the rear brake calipers on many modern cars screw in and out unlike the front caliper pistons that just slide in and out.This is due to the handbrake using the rear calipers for handbrake operation. A special tool is normally required that screws the pistons back in so that you can fit the new pads. On many cars one side will be a left hand thread and the other a right hand thread. Some cars will be the same thread. These rear pistons will not just push in. Good luck.

Need to replace the front & rear brakes . Is there any special tools needed to do this job .


For caliper brakes, mainly a large C-clamp or brake cylinder piston tool, to collapes the piston back into the caliper, to install the new pads. If you have rear drum brakes, they make a couple different brake spring tools for removing the springs on the brake shoes.

you may have air trapped in the ABS EHCU. Did you use this procedure?

Bleeding the EHCU

Bleeding the EHCU requires the use of the TECH-1 scanner or its equivalent and the appropriate cartridge. Additionally, 3 tools, J-39177 or equivalent, are required. Bleeding cannot be performed without this equipment.
The EHCU must be bled after replacement or if air is trapped within the unit. It must be bled after bleeding the master cylinder and before bleeding the individual wheel circuits.
The Internal Bleed Valves on either side of the unit must be opened 1 / 4 - 1 / 2 turn before bleeding begins. These valves open internal passages within the unit. Actual bleeding is performed at the two bleeders on the front of the EHCU module. The bleeders must not be opened when the system is not pressurized. The ignition switch must be OFF or false trouble codes may be set.
  1. Open the internal bleed valve 1 / 4 - 1 / 2 turn each.
  2. Install one tool J-39177 on the left bleed stem of the EHCU. Install one tool on the right bleed stem and install the third tool on the combination valve.
  3. Inspect the fluid level in the master cylinder, filling if needed.
  4. Slowly depress the brake pedal and hold it down.
  5. Open the left bleeder on the front of the unit. Allow fluid to flow until no air is seen or until the brake pedal bottoms.
  6. Close the left bleeder, then slowly release the pedal. Wait 15 seconds.
  7. Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6, including the 15 second wait, until no air is seen in the fluid.
  8. Tighten the left internal bleed valve to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm).
  9. Repeat Steps 3-7 at the right bleeder on the front of the unit.
  10. When bleeding of the right port is complete, tighten the right internal bleed valve to 5 ft. lbs. (7 Nm).
  11. Remove the 3 special tools.
  12. Check the master cylinder fluid level, refilling as necessary.
  13. Bleed the individual brake circuits at each wheel.
  14. Switch the ignition ON . Use the hand scanner to perform 3 function tests on the system.
  15. Carefully test drive the vehicle at moderate speeds; check for proper pedal feel and brake operation. If any problem is noted in feel or function, repeat the entire bleeding procedure.

How do you replace the rear brake pads on a 1994 corvette? is there a special tool you need to remove the e-brake cable?


On my 90 it was this easy.

Raise car
Remove wheels
Open bleeder and spread pads
Close bleeder
Remove the two bolts holding the calipers on
Replace pads
Install calipers
Replace wheels and lower car.

No, on rear wheel disc brakes, the pistons have to be turned in clockwise, and you need a special tool to do it, or you have something strong enough to put in the slots and turn it, but just turn them in far enough to get the new pads to slide over the rotors.

1996 olds aurora back brake pad replacement, how to compress the pads to get the caliper back over the pads?


Special tool is a 1" cube with tabs on each side that fits into indentations on the brake piston and can be purchased for $10-12 @ most discount parts stores. Use 3/8" ratchet with short extension and 'special tool to carefully turn piston onto internal hand brake screw. Take care to not tear dust boot. When piston is fully collapsed, make sure to align piston indentations perpendicular to brake pad as there are bumps on pad that fit into them. Also while screwing in piston either remove about 2/3 of brake fluid in master cylinder and refil afterwords or open the bleeder valve on brake piston assembly. Bleed if necessary.

Trying to remove and replace rear brake rotors


First, make sure your parking brake is off.
Remove the rear caliper and then the brake pad housing. In the center hub of the rotor the parking brake shoes are located. The may need to be loosen first. There is a hole between 2 of the studs you need to align at the bottom. Look in the hole with a flashlight and find the star wheel. Use a screw driver to turn the wheel up a few turns to loosen the parking brake shoes from the rotor hub.
After that there are 2 threaded holes in the rotor near the studs you put two 8mm bolts in and slowly tighten each and it will pull the rotor off the hub. They rust up pretty bad so use penetrating oil on them.

  1. Remove the rear disc brake caliper (2K327).
  2. Remove the brake caliper bolts.
  3. Lift the rear disc brake caliper off the rear disc brake caliper anchor plate (2B582).
  1. sya~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Do not allow grease, oil, brake fluid or other contaminants to contact the brake pads.
    Remove the brake pads by pushing inward and rotating the pad up.
  1. NOTE: Use a block of wood or used pad to protect the piston and boots.
    Retract the caliper piston (2196) into the rear disc brake caliper.
