Question about 1997 Buick LeSabre

While driving keeps accelerating even while foot is on brake it tries to keep going

    just started today. No work has done to car recently. Just bought it used in February. Had the oil changed about two weeks ago and they had left a vacuum line loose because the check engine light had come on, brought it back and they connected it and reset the light. The light is not on and does not come on when this happens. At first I thought that the mat was stuck under the pedal but it was not. The engine does not seem to speed up when this happens but when I put my foot on the brake to stop it is fighting me to go. I used to work for Dodge dealership for 30 years and cannot remember what the problem used to be when it happend.

    also I don't know if the cruise is on or not. There is no owners manual and I don't know if it should be in the middle to be off or all the way to the left. I know that when you put it all the way to the right it sets it. Right now it is in the middle

    I am having the same problem with my 1990 corsica. I've been told that it could be a stuck accelerater cable or the throttle body has a flap in it that can get carboned up and stick. I'm not sure what it is but I hope that someone can answer it.

Stuck Accelerator Linkage or Cruise control Problem I need More information to help you more accurately. Has any work been done on the car recently? How long has this problem been happening?

1996 Pontiac grand am she will not accelerate when shifted into drive or reverse. It idles great in park but drowns out in drive and will not go.


Although I'd need more information for a better diagnosis, I suspect that your idle bypass (Idle Air Controller) has failed or has become disconnected. When you begin to feel the car faltering after moving the shift lever into DRIVE, try giving it A LITTLE extra throttle (just enough to keep it running) with your foot FIRMLY on the brake (so you do not propel yourself into something). When you release the brake, if you can drive the car normally until you release the accelerator, your problem is the idle bypass circuit (probably the IAC itself).
If the car still stalls out, I'd need more details to give a diagnosis.

When I try to shift from park to drive it gets tight at reverse as if doesn't want go but once out of reverse it shift normally until shifting back to park when I have to go threw reverse then it tightens...


Is it only when you go from park to reverse? Or is it just as bad going from neutral to reverse? I've noticed on mine that it's often tight if I park on even a slight slope. If it only happens when going from park to reverse, try this. Hold your foot on the brake, and put the car in drive. Keeping constant pressure on the brake, go back to park, then back into drive. Did you feel the stiffness when you had your foot on the brake?

When first driving, I hear a high pitched whistling sound while my foot is on the accelerator. As I pick my foot off the accelerator, the sound will stop completely or after a moment or two and then return...


I have the exact same problem, however reversed. My whistling sound stops when I accelerate and starts when my foot is off the accelerator. Frustrates me and am afraid to have it looked at for fear of the cost of fixing this problem. Have you since discovered what the problem is or was?

2006 Audi A4 2.0 rpm was at 8 in park and foot on brake!


it sounds like a stuck open throttle body. take off the air intake hose and see what it looks like, if it is carbonated that is the place to start. it could be a huge multitude of issues but start simple and work your way up from there. keep me posted
