Even though the fuel pump may be running, if it's a 4.3 Vortec, a pound or two of pressure can make starting it a problem. I'd check the fuel pressure to rule out the pump. If the pressure checks out okay, then I would lean towards the spider injector as the culprit. I hope that helps. Please rate any answers you may receive and leave a testimonial. I have a 2002 oldsmobile alero if it sits for 4 hours or more it wont start but if i pull this hose that runs from breather box to manifold and spray starting fluid in it i starts fine

What you are experiencing may be one of two issues. First, it could be a weak and soon-to-fail fuel pump. Keep a close eye on that. Second, it could be the fuel pressure regulator. This maintains proper fuel pressure to the injector rail(s). The reason for the problem is that once you shut off the vehicle, it takes a while for the fuel pressure in the system to bleed down to zero. When you first turn the key to the ON position (prior to start position, if you listen carefully, you should hear a buzzing noise from the fuel tank area for a few seconds. This is the fuel pump "priming" the fuel rail to pressure. A weak pump won't get the pressure up high enough to allow the regulator to do its thing and thus there won't be sufficient pressure to fire the injectors. Once the vehicle starts, the PCM turns the fuel pump on fully, then it has time to get to pressure. Thus, when you use the starting fluid and get the engine to fire, the PCM can then issue the fuel pump on signal and keep the vehicle running.

Cranks no start

There is a lot of types of starting fluid. Some is kind of safe....kind of!! Most will destroy your engine!! If you are using starting fluid on a Saturn, you really need to stop. Your fuel pressure could be incorrect. The fuel pump relay could be bad, or a fuse. Your fuel pump may be going out. Listen to your fuel pump when you turn the key to the "run" position before turning the starter over. You shoulh hear a 2 second buzz from the fuel pump. If you don't hear this , you have a fuel pump issue.

2000 dodge neon will run on starting fluid once, then no start

You're either out of gas or you need a new fuel pump.
Roll the keys back to the 'off' position.
Have someone sit by the back tire and listen as you roll the key forward until the lights on the dash come on DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE OVER.

If they hear the pump then you're out of gas, if they don't hear the pump your pump is likely burned up.

Turns over and over can hear fuel pump come on will start with starting fluid and runs great but when shut off for a little while wont start again only with starting fluid

If the starting fluid works then you have a fuel pump or a fuel pump relay issue. The fuel pump relay allows the pump to come on for about 2 secs and prime the fuel system. Once the engine starts then the power to the fuel pump runs through the oil pressure circuit.
If the car starts on starting fluid and then continues to run... I would lean toward a fuel pump relay issue. Hope this helps, Good Luck!

I have a 1994 chevrolet cavalier 2.2L problem is it cranks and gets spark to all cylinders, have tested with tester to be sure, but it does not turn over and start what else could it be?? please help

Is it getting fuel? Have you tested the fuel pressure? You may have a faulty fuel pump or fuel pump relay. Can you hear your fuel pump buzzing. Remove your gas cap and have someone turn the key to the run position while you have your ear near the open gas tank. You should hear the pump making a buzz. If you don't hear anything you have a bad fuel pump or problem in the electrical circuit to the pump. If you do hear it running you still need to check the pressure. If the pump is buzzing it still may not be working correctly. You could try giving it a shot of starting fluid and if it runs on the starting fluid you know you have a fuel related problem. Be careful with the starting fluid because it is very flamable.

CHECK FUEL PUMP FUSE AND RELAY.IF BOTH GOOD LISTEN FOR FUEL PUMP RUNNING IN GAS TANK WHEN YOU TURN ON THE IGNITION SWITCH.YOU HEAR NO SOUND.SCAN VAN FIRST FOR PCM FAULTS SINCE IT CONTROLS FUEL PUMP IF PCM GOOD.FUEL PUMP IS BAD.IF FUEL PUMP RUNNING REPLACE FUEL FILTER.

Im working on a 95 s10 blazer. It has the 4.3 engine. It will only start if it is sprayed with starting fluid.the fuel pump, fuel filter, and pressure regulator have all been replaced.Seems like the system...

It sounds like the fuel pump is not working. Perhaps the install was not completed correctly. Things to check, fuel pump relay, wiring, voltage to the pump.
The priming happens as soon as you put the key in and turn it to "acc" (you may hear a humming sound). Then once you turn it to "start" the injectors and spark plugs start firing.
Another possibility is that the fuel filter was installed backwards.

2000 pontiac grand am - not starting. fuel pump does sound like its runing when you first turn the key. If you spray starting fluid into the intake it will start but will not keep running.

If it fires on starting fluid, its not getting fuel. If you have acess to the tools test the fuel pressure. If not start with the filter, its cheap and if the pump sounds like its running this would be the next major cause. If that dont fix it, its probably the pump. Had a sunfire around the same year that would actually run for ten minutes or so before it died. Never checked the fuel pump because the car would run so I assumed it was working, I mean you could hear it kick on. But after changing every thing else the car ended up needing a fuel pump. Hope this helps

1996 blazer will crank when cold but will not start. I spray starting fluid in air cleaner and it starts right up. once it is warm it will keep starting. Have replaced coolant sensor but still have same...

This could be many problems. But here is one to try. Turn your key on and make sure your fuel pump runs for 3 seconds. It will hum then quit. If you do not hear the pump running with the key turned on, replace fuel pump relay. This may solve your problem.

Have to use starter fluid to start my car

Starving for fuel. Start by making sure the fuel pump is running. Turn the ignition on without starting the car and listen for the pump. It should run for a few seconds and then shut off if you don't start the engine. If you hear nothing, check the fuse. If the fuse is good then it can be a defective fuel pump relay, pump itself. If you hear the pump run and then shut off, suspect a clogged fuel filter, defective fuel pressure regulator, or an extremely weak fuel pump that is running but pumping no fuel.
