How could the axle nuts be missing from the front wheels of my vibe? the wheel bearings went bad and the mechanic said the axle nuts were missing, not there at all

On one side i can understand as they are both right handed threads so the drivers side could come off on its own but i have seen them loose but never missing ,the other side can only tighten itself with the direction of rotation ,complete puzzle unless someone used your car a donor vehicle on a moonlight shopping trip for spares

If the car is front wheel drive a puller is required to dismantle the hub a rather involved job better left to a mechanic .If rear wheel drive do the following. ( Applies to front wheel drive also.) Chock rear wheels,loosen front wheel nuts, jack up car, fit safety stands,remove wheel , remove grease cap from axle. remove split pin or locking nut on axle ,Remove hub, with a punch drive out the grease seal ,the tapered cone bearings can now be removed, the 2 bearing cups still in the housing will have to be pressed out ,all old grease has to be cleaned out. the new cones must be repacked with high temp bearing grease . tap in the seal with the lip facing inwards , slide on the hub fit the outer cone to the axle , the spacer and nut goes on next, tighten the nut to seat the bearings , spin the hub make sure its free to spin, back off the nut one eighth of a turn fit a new split pin or lock tab. fit grease cap and road wheel.

Replacement instruction and diagram on a front wheel bearing for a pontic vibe 2004


The bearing is pressed into the knuckle. You will need to bring the knuckle to a machine shop or repair shop to have it pressed out and the new one pressed in. To remove the knuckle first remove the axle nut from the axle. Unbolt the caliper and bracket. Remove the rotor. Remove the outer tie rod from the knuckle. Seperate the lower ball joint from the knuckle. Unplug the abs harness if equipped. Remove the bolts that secure the strut to the knuckle. Finally remove the knuckle from the vehicle. When you reinstall everything it is vitally important the torque the axle nut to the proper spec. Failure to do so will result in the premature failure of the new wheel bearing. I would also advise getting a quality wheel bearing from a reputable manufacture. SKF is a well known and trusted brand.

Hello, If you Chrysler has replaceable wheel bearings and seal. This is the way it goes---pack the wheel bearing with new grease-install the bearing in the wheel nub--install new back wheel seal--coat the axle shaft with grease lightly, thing coat-----install wheel hub on to axle shaft...be careful here don't damage the rear hub seal------------insert front race washer---install axle shaft nut--tighten nut down wheel nut until it is firm with water pump pliers----spin the hub/with tire mounted.
(the wheel and hub will turn but not freely)----take the pliers and back off the axle nut 1/4 turn----now spin the wheel and axle hub, it should spin freely---now if doesn't spin freely---back off the axle nut about 1/16 or 1/32 (or just a little bit)-----now, spin the wheel and hub and if turn freely------------Now grab the top of the wheel/tire and move it back and forth.-----if there is some movement ---try tighten the axle nut just a little little bit, unit the one can barely feel some little movement in the wheel/tire and hub.-----------Now, spin the wheel/tire and hub and it should also turn freely.

If it does----install new and correct size of cotter pin and bent the ends around the axle nut.----

coat the inside of the hub cup with grease. Now, use an rubber or plastic hammer to install the cup on the wheel/tire hub. You are finished with one wheel bearing maintenance. Now do the other side.



I really don't know if you Chrysler Cirrus has replaceable wheel bearing. All the auto/trucks have replaceable hubs, that means that the replacement is total hub with axle shaft, sealed bearings, and seals. This is bolt to each wheel steering hub. This work to remove these one unit hubs.

Four bolts hold the axle hub to the steering hub. Hear is the problem!! it has rusted to the steering hub. Also, these hubs cost more than replacing bearings, races, seals to cool turn of $180 to $250+ I wish you luck in your replacement of wheel bearing on your Chrysler. GB..stewbison

Not supposed to use air gun on axle nut

Torque Wrench -- as you did

Check Wheel Sensors -- one may be bad or more
likely the mechanic damaged it.

Use a Volt Meter --put on A/C unplug sensor &
put meter on wires and spin the wheels

Do all four & compare

Replace front wheel bearing


The front wheel bearing for your Impala is an integrated wheel hub/bearing/ABS.
The whole thing gets replaced. It should look like the one off my Bonneville; Bearing.

Remove wheel/tire. Remove brakes. Remove rotor. Remove axle nut. Press-out axle shaft*. Unplug ABS connector. Remove 3 bearing bolts.

*To press out axle, you may need a special tool from an auto parts store.
Don't forget to put the heat sheild back on during reassembly, and the axle nut need to be very tight.

Hi. how would i repair a rear axle for a 2006 toyota corolla? i dont have a lift so will i need to take it to an autobody shop? if so how much do these repairs cost usually?


What are going to do to repair the axle? There really is no axle on front drive cars, the wheel assembly is connected to a hub that is mounted to the frame through swing arms. And, you would not take your car to a autobody shop for mechanical work. The cost of repairs depends on what is being done.

Front bearing nut torque specification rear wheel drive?


front bearing wheel nut holding axle on? 115 foot pounds and hammer in or crimp the nut after tightening. ^ like shape into slot of axle this locks the axle. for the wheel bearing for rear wheel drive the nut should be tightened by hand till tight 15 foot pounds then backed off 1/4 turn, be sure there is plenty of grees in the bearing cup before tighting nut be sure to line up slot for key with rotor on the rotor should turn free and should not have any slop in it, put the wheel on it and put the nuts on and try wiggleing the wheel back and forth if any movement readuast nut. If it is to tight it will over heat outter wheel bearing, also be sure there is greese in inner wheel bearing.

Wheel bearing assembly


I assume front.
I just finished this job on my 01 Aurora. 1) Loosen Axle Nut - 33mm (with tire on ground so you don't torque the trannie) 2) Remove wheel 3) Remove caliper 4) Remove Tie-Rod end 5) Remove bolts holding strut to wheel assy. 6) Remove axle nut 7) Remove 3 bolts holding wheel bearing (I use a lot of PB Blaster on nuts and around the flange of the wheel bearing.) 8) Disconnect the wheel Speed sensor wire. 9) Remove wheel bearing - it may be stuck. I use PB Blaster and a big cement chisel to get it loose 10) At this point I always replace the Half-Shaft if the car has 100K miles or more. The only cost $50.00 and you've aready done all the work to get to it. 11) Just tap the axle spline to remove the wheel bearing - you don't need a puller or anything like that. 12) Put it all back together. Don't forget the plate that holds the wheel speed sensor clip - I always seems to forget this!

P.S. I was sure the wheel bearing noise was coming from my L.F. bearing, but it had no play in it. (Hold wheel at the 12 and 6 positions and see if you have any play.) So at the last minute I jacked of the R.F. and found just a bit of play. I went for the R.F. and that was the one that was bad.

Replace front wheel bearings. The right front brake disc has a very slight wobble in it. My mechanic suggested replacing the front wheel bearings. How do I do it?


Its pretty simple.
1. take off wheel
2. take off brake caliper, caliper bracket, and rotor.
3. remove axle nut which secures axle into the bearing
4. should be 3 bolts on the flange which hold the whole wheel bearing/hub unit on.
5. reverse for reassembly

The wheel hub and bearing are all one assembly and are bout as a unit.

Wheel Hub, Wheel Knuckle and Wheel Bearing SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED Description Tool Number Tie Rod End Separator T85M-3395-A
Removal
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel (1007) and tire assembly.
  3. NOTE: It is not necessary to disconnect the front brake hose (2078).

    Remove the disc brake caliper (2B120) and suspend it with mechanic's wire out of the way. Refer to Section 06-03 for the removal procedure.
  4. Remove the front disc brake rotor (1125).
  5. Remove and discard the cotter pin.
  6. Remove the nut retainer and insulator.
  7. Remove the front axle wheel hub retainer (3B477) and the front wheel outer bearing retainer washer (1195).




  8. Remove and discard the cotter pin from the front suspension lower arm ball joint (3050).
  9. Loosen the front suspension lower arm ball joint nut until it contacts the front wheel driveshaft joint.

  10. Strike the front wheel knuckle with a hammer while pulling down on the front suspension lower arm (3078) until the front suspension lower arm ball joint separates from the front wheel knuckle.




  11. Remove the front suspension lower arm ball joint nut.




  12. Remove the front suspension lower arm ball joint from the front wheel knuckle.
  13. Remove and discard the cotter pin.




  14. Remove the tie rod end nut.




  15. Use Tie Rod End Separator T85M-3395-A to separate the tie rod end (3A130) from the front wheel knuckle.




  16. Remove the front brake anti-lock sensor bolt.




  17. Remove the two front shock absorber-to-front wheel knuckle nuts.




  18. Remove the two front shock absorber-to-front wheel knuckle bolts.
  19. Remove the front shock absorber (18124) from the front wheel knuckle.
  20. Use 2-Jaw Puller D80L-1002-L, or equivalent, to separate the front wheel driveshaft and joint (3B436) from the front wheel knuckle.
  21. Remove the front wheel hub, front wheel knuckle and front wheel bearing as an assembly from the vehicle.
  22. If necessary, match mark and remove the steering stop bolt and steering stop bolt jam nut from the front wheel knuckle.




Installation
  1. Position the front wheel hub, front wheel knuckle and front wheel bearing as an assembly on the front wheel driveshaft and joint.
  1. Install the front wheel knuckle into the front shock absorber.
  1. Install the two front shock absorber-to-front wheel knuckle bolts.
  1. Install the two front shock absorber-to-front wheel knuckle nuts. Tighten the front shock absorber-to-front wheel knuckle nuts to 113-123 Nm (83-91 lb-ft).
