Question about GMC Safari

1 Answer

I have a 1992 gmc safari with r 12 system. The condenser had to be changed(a hole) but now how do i get it filled? I put 134 in it and it rattled so I had it taken out. Can you advise me seeing how I'm an older than this van ( at least no payment) ?

It has a fill port near the accumulator can in the low side AC compressor line, the low side is the larger line. You must pull a vacuum before you refill it, so you will need to get an AC evacuation pump, this is mandatory.

You have to convert to R134A freon you can't get R12 freon anymore.

Need to recharge the ac system. I see there are two ports within the system. Which is the proper one to recharge my system? 1994 gmc sirra pickup k1500 with 350 motor

if you truck has r-12 you need to convert to r-134
if you truck has been converted to r-134 the small port on the low pressure side is the port to use..
the truck must be in a warm aera about 80 degrees
then hook up the hose or gauges on to low side
start the truck and turn the air on (putting it on high cool and high blower open the can of freon and as the compressure in the truck starts to draw the gas in rock the can from side to side .. if the gas is going in the can will get cold

Can i buy the freon for this car and put in myself. What is the product name? 1992 oldsmobile ciera

I doubt it. But you can tell by looking at your A/C lines. if the valves, after your take the caps off, are the size of a tire valve then it's R-12 Freon and you cannot refill yourself. If they're far larger then a tire valve then it's R-134 and you can buy that at any part store and fill yourself.

R12 freon has been discontinued due to ozone depletion there for we have r 134a which is just as good but wont hurt the attmosphere you can do a conversion to 134 by changing the fittings to put freon in system you dont have to really change anything else

Ac conversion

sometimes, it is located after the compressor or after the condenser before the dryer.

look closely on all the lines. it could be a 3/16 fitting if it is an original R-12. and not a 1/4 standard fitting for R-12.

Air Condition

The low-pressure side recharge valve was changed with the conversion to 134 so it is nearly impossible to use the wrong stuff.

I found this discussion that indicates your car requires R-12 if it has not been converted:
