1 Answer

1996 Achieva 3100 V6, on hot days if I shut car off then try to restart it about 30 mins later, it misfires like crazy, no power, backfires in the motor, and some times stalls out and wont restart til it cools off, about 2 hours later. Can anyone please give me some ideas on where to go.

Hey there Beth. Welcome to FixYa. If you have a check engine light on, you need to take your car to Autozone or Advanced and have it scanned for error codes, if it is on. That light comes on when there is a problem with the vehicle, detected by the computer. You should change your spark plugs, coils, wires, coil pack, and distributor cap. I would suggest the whole package, get a tune up. The big thing is the check engine light though, if your is on. This can tell you what to change and where to look. So, if it is on, take it to get scanned. They do it for free and it only takes a minute or two. Your timing belt/chain may be slipping, causing the backfires. You may need many things done. The scan is step one. If your check engine light is not on, step one is the tune up. Make sure it is not overheating. Overheating can cause a car to shut off. Make sure there is coolant in the car. Check your air filter. Clean your battery wires, terminals, and post. Make sure all the hoses are hooked up correctly. What your doing is getting the car to run its best. This helps diagnose other problems.

Thanks Rickyrt441, I keep forgetting to say that I cant get codes checked as the port has no power running to it. I have had the whole dash apart and cant find anything wrong with any wires. It always runs hot not overheating just above half way mark when in traffic, but open roads it goes down. Fan is working, just changed the thermostat, and drained the system then refilled it. Coils, the thing they sit on, plugs, wires, ECT, throttle postion sensor were just replaced last year.

have you had the fuel system cleaned as it could be dirt.also have you cleaned the throttle valve(plate)as when these get dirty it can cause this type of could also be a fuel supply problem like fuel filter, fuel pump, injectors.the ignition circuit could have a problem also like the coils, the ignition module, you don`t say if you replaced the plugs when changing the could also be the crank sensor or cam sensor possibility.this should be checked out at a shop if you can as some of these things need experience and equipment to diagnose.

Have you checked the fuel pressure when the car quits on you.It sounds like a fuel pump that is overheating and binding up when it gets really hot. Then after cooling it will work till it heats up again. Good luck

1996 Achieva starts then stalls after 2 mins. It is the 3100 V6 motor. The car will start and run fine for about 2 mins then it is like someone has turned the key off. Once it has stalled it will fire...

The only thing that you didn`t replace was the crack shaft position sensor. There are 2.One on the back of the motor and one by the crank shaft pulley. What you should do is remove the one in the back of the motor and look it over for cracks or swelling. This is the one that usually goes bad. Also you do not have to out die electric grease on this type of ICM nor do you have to do any reset for the computer.Check this out and let me know what you find.Good luck.

Can a catalytic converter cause your car to stall out, run sluggish up hills, misfire, and surge, cut in and out almost like you turn key off... Hello again everyone, I am back listing another question on...

It sure can. If the car can't breathe, it can't run. The backfiring can be caused by a pressure uncertainty. You did not hear this from me, but if you can run JUST the muffler, not the cat, AKA straightpiping, you will let your car breathe just a bit more. You might try this to see if it helps any at all. (I hope you do not live in Cali, as I suggest you not try this if you do.)

1996 Achieve runs sluggish up hills, check engine light blinks, poor gas mileage, smells of gas, wants to stall out, has stalled out, will only restart if sat for about 20 minutes, runs fine when cold out....

When the check engine light flashes it means there is a misfire in the ignition system.Unfortunately you replaced the ignition control module first which is the more expensive instead of checking the plugs, plug wires ,and coils first. If you have an ohm meter then ohm the plug wires.Check the coils and make sure they are not corroded on the towers.Check the plugs and make sure there is no carbon tracking on them. These will look like little lighting bolts and if you try to rub it off it will not come off. What they are is hair line cracks.Hope this helps.Good luck.
