The negative side of the battery is the grounded side for your vehicle and this is normally attached to the engine block to provide the lowest resistance path for the starter which is the heaviest current hog in any vehicle. The chassis is attached to the engine block (sometimes the transmission housing) via a heavy, sometimes braided cable which is probably concealed in insulation but will be also fairly heavy gauge. Examining the engine block should locate the chassis-block cable without too much difficulty.

You probably have lost your ground. Check ground straps going from firewall to engine block. Then follow through and verify at the lights and look for exposed or corroded wires.

Where do i attach the ground wire for the starter on my 2001 windstar

There isn't a ground "wire" going to the starter. You have your main batery wire and a power wire (smaller yellow and black wire) coming from the ignition switch. It gives power through that wire when the key is turned to start it. The starter is grounded when it is bolted to the engine/transmission. Below is the wiring diagram and also a picture of the solenoid on the starter. Where the yellow arrow is, is where you put the yellow and black wire and where the red arrow is, is where you put the main big red wire to. Hope this helps you.....

Clean the battery terminals with a wire brush & sandpaper. Make sure the fan is well grounded also. You may have to clean the black wire ground at the grounding spot. Also your fan motor may have a dead short & need to be replaced. Good luck!

Brake light, reverse light and turn signal issues

Hello. The symptoms you are describing are likely due to a poor ground. Temporarily install a new ground wire by securing a piece of copper wire to the frame with a self tapping screw. Use this ground wire along with the hot wire to see if each of these lights works. If it does, trace the ground wire back to the frame, unscrew it and clean up the metal with emery cloth so you reestablish a good ground.

Radio wires differ from the speaker to the radio

This is the most common problem with self installs. The best thing to do is to get the car radio installation plug,it will plug into the factory plug for your factory radio and will give you a color coded pigtail to wire into that usually matches up perfectly with new aftermarket car radios. If the wires are already cut then you best bet is to extend the wires so that they are easy to work with hookup the power, ground, antenna and try dirrerent combos to isolate each speaker and label the wires accordingly.

hi,

you have a bad ground wire to the frame somewhere, its probably a rusted connection, look for a black wire from the back of the headlight to the ground wire connection at the frame, remove that wire off the frame and sand that connection with sandpaper, replace.

good luck
