Question about Dodge Dakota

I'm puting in a new head light assembly and there are two cables that look like ground cables screwed to the body they both connect to the back of the head light assembly. one is broken. is this something i don't need to worry about or should i replace the broken cable?

Replace The Broken Cable, It Is A Ground, If The Ground Is Not Connected, Than You May Have Severe, Costly Electrical Issues Down The Road.

My 1963 Ford Fairlane 500 has no tail lights, park lights, or bake lights. But it has head lights, and turn signals. All fuses look good.


Look for a wire(s) that are attached to the tail lights, which have a small screw that screws into the body of the car inside the trunk. Clean the screw off with sand paper, and the hole where the screw screws into the body of the car. It was very common on older vehicles to ground the tail lights to the body of the car, and if the ground connections gets corroded, the lights will go out.

Check the body ground cable connection. I don't know exactly where it is on your model, but it's usually a wire from the battery ground cable harness with a ring connector on the end, bolted with a sheet metal screw to the radiator mounting panel at the front of the engine compartment. (Sometimes it is attached to a fender well at the side of the engine compartment near a fuse or relay box.) If it is necessary to remove rust from the sheet metal under the connection, coat the screw, terminal and surrounding sheet metal with sensor-safe silicone rubber after assembly. Also, cover the end of the screw on the other side of the sheet metal.

I can't find the main ground in my 98 buick lesabre. Can anyone help?


Unless I am missing your question, there is no main ground.
The battery cable is grounded to the engine and the engine has a ground cable back to the body or frame. That cable may also have a smaller wire going to a body ground. The car uses the body to connect ground cables to for components to get power back to the battery.

Car just went dead, no dash lights, no nothing put in new battery still nothing.


You might have a broken, or about to break, motor mount. Most cars, vans, trucks, semi's, have a ground strap. That strap, goes from the lower back of the motor to the furewall, transferring the engine ground to the body. Does your Escort have "original" battery clamps, or replacements??? I hjave seen cables, that when they corrode just a feww inches from the terminal, LOOSE continuity (strenth/power) of the wire. Use a "jumper cable" from the battery to where the ground attaches: AFTYER connecting the positive & LEAVE the negative off. Makes the "jumper" the wire, THEN, see if you have head lights, or power. If so replace the cable, test the positive cable the same way, USING MUCH MORE CAUTION

Hi, it's possible the bulb is burned out or not making good contact with the circuit board. It should come on during the bulb check when you first turn the key on. Pull out the cluster and check the bulb. If it's good, see if you can clean the contact surfaces to get it working again. Or, move to another state where they don't worry about stupid things like a light bulb.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the two steering column shroud-to-panel retaining screws and remove the shroud.
  3. Remove the lower instrument panel trim.
  4. Remove the cluster trim cover from the instrument panel by removing the eight screws.
  5. Remove the four instrument cluster to panel retaining screws.
  6. Position the cluster slightly away from the panel for access to the back of the cluster to disconnect the speedometer.

If there is not sufficient access to disengage the speedometer cable from the speedometer, it may be necessary to remove the speedometer cable at the transmission and pull cable through cowl, to allow room to reach the speedometer quick disconnect.
  1. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the printed circuit, and any bulb-and-socket assemblies from the wiring harness to the cluster assembly and remove the cluster assembly from the instrument panel.

To install:
  1. Apply approximately 1 / 8 in. diameter ball of D7AZ-19A331-A Silicone Dielectric compound or equivalent in the drive hole of the speedometer head.
  2. Position the cluster near its opening in the instrument panel.
  3. Connect the wiring harness connector to the printed circuit, and any bulb-and-socket assemblies from the wiring harness to the cluster assembly.
  4. Position the cluster to the instrument panel and install the four cluster to panel retaining screws.
  5. Install the panel trim covers and the steering column shroud.
  6. Connect the battery ground cable.
  7. Check operation of all gauges, lamps and signals.

Torque specs for 3.2 1995 heads on my isuzu... I need to fix the car ASAP....


Hi, to install follow the procedure below:


  1. Install new camshaft seals and retaining plates onto the cylinder. Tighten the right camshaft seal retaining plate 6mm bolts to 65 inch lbs. Tighten the left camshaft seal retaining plate 8mm bolts to 191 inch lbs.
  2. Thoroughly clean the cylinder head and engine block sealing surfaces.
  3. Place a new head gasket on the engine block and carefully position the cylinder head on top of the new gasket.

Do not reuse or apply oil to the cylinder head bolts.
  1. Install new cylinder head bolts and torque them in sequence to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) for the M11 bolts and 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm) for the M8 bolts.
  2. Install the dipstick tube bracket to the cylinder head.
  3. Connect the front exhaust pipes to the exhaust manifolds. Tighten the exhaust bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (67 Nm).
  4. Install the power steering pump bracket. Torque the mounting bolts to 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
  5. Install the cylinder head covers.
  6. Install the timing belt and the auto tensioner (pusher). Torque the mounting bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
  7. Install the timing belt cover and oil cooler hoses and bracket.
  8. Install the crankshaft pulley. Torque the center bolt to 123 ft. lbs. (167 Nm).
  9. Install the fan pulley assembly.
  10. Install the power steering pump.
  11. Install the accessory drive belts.
  12. Install the engine coolant manifold and the heater hose.
  13. Install the intake manifold. Torque the nuts and bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm) in a crisscross pattern.
  14. Install the fuel injector connectors and the fuel hoses to the fuel rail.
  15. Install the common chamber. Torque the nuts and bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  16. Install the EGR valve assembly. Torque the mounting bolts on the valve side to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm) and the bolts on the exhaust side to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  17. Connect the evaporative emission canister purge hose.
  18. Connect the fuel pressure control valve vacuum hose.
  19. Connect the positive crankcase ventilation hose.
  20. Install the throttle body assembly. Torque the mounting bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm).
  21. Connect the vacuum hoses to the throttle body.
  22. Install the ignition control module and the spark plug wires.
  23. Connect the MAP sensor; Canister vacuum switching valve (VSV); Exhaust gas recirculation (VSV); Intake air temperature sensor and ground connectors.
  24. Connect the vacuum booster hose.
  25. Connect the air vacuum hose.
  26. Connect the accelerator cable. Adjust the accelerator cable by pulling the cable housing while closing the throttle valve and tightening the adjusting nut and screw cap by hand temporarily. Now loosen the adjusting nut by three turns and then tightening the screw cap. Make sure the throttle valve reaches the screw stop when the throttle is closed.
  27. Install the cooling fan assembly and the upper fan shroud.
  28. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  29. Connect the negative battery cable.
  30. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
  31. Refill and bleed the power steering pump if necessary.
  32. Refill the engine with fresh oil.
  33. Run the engine and check for leaks and proper compression.

one of the bulbs has abroken filament and it connects to the other filament causin this concern replace lr brake light bulb and it will be fine

Headlights On, Brake lights off, tail lights off


This type of problem can be caused by bad ground connections. Find as many as you can and clean the surfaces between the loop the screw goes through and the chassis (body). Take the tail light assemblies out and find the ground wires - black wires screwed to the body. Look under the hood, Pull the headlight assemblies out if necessary and find those little guys. They are generally close to the light. Follow the wire loom back from the lights and look for the black wires coming out. Loosen the screws and work the loop back and forth against the metal. Sometimes there is paint on the metal and the screw is the only thing making the connection. Work the screw in and out snug it against the loop and rotate the loop to freshen the connection.

Geo Prizm brake lights


I had the same problem, what I did to fix it was as follows:
  • Removed the plastic light holders from the tail lamp.
  • On each of the three bulbs there is a ground wire that is attached to the plastic light holder via a screw. Remove these connections and clean, I used some very light sand paper.
  • Reassemble, Worked like a Charm for me, and I save a $90 charge from Firestone by doing it myself...
