If the timing chain broke there is a good chance that you may have bent some valves. Carry out a compression check to see if any cylinders show abnormally low pressures. If this is the case, a cylinder head overhaul will be required. If you find this information helpful, please rate the solution.

Put a vacuum gauge on the intake manifold. (any port)...If the needle is bouncing, likely you have a bent valve. Some engines are "interference" but even those that aren't can still have a valve/piston collision if the chain (usually the top gear) fails. Also check firing order etc.

Replaced timming chain now does want to run correctly bad fumes

It sounds like the timing chain was replaced one tooth off. The only other option if the timing chain is correct would be to adjust the ignition timing. Since the timing chain was replaced I would think it to be the first problem.

they dont test the parts.most part are easy to test.now you need check all jobs made on the engine.check timing chain.remember most chevy engines have 2marks and desconect a single cable from distribuitor when set the timing ,check the calibration of the IAC ,Check the fuel regulator and make sure the spring running free and check the knock sensor .check if the parts are good, use a ohmn meter and dobble check all grounds terminals to engine and chassis .d recheck the distribuitor and if you are from LA area I'M help you free.

What would cause slack in my timing chain

Not sure which engine this is,but if it has a chain,it most likely has a tensioner, either spring loaded or oil pressure fed.(if you dont see oil everywhere,it's probably spring loaded). These tensioners usually wear out before the chain breaks, but you'll want to replace both at the same time.If the engine was still running decent untill you shut it off, then there shouldn't be any other damage.

If the chain broke while the engine was running, and I presume it did, it is possible that you may have damaged the valves. When the chain breaks the cam shaft stops moving and the valves stay in their last position. The pistons continue to move until the engine comes to a stop. An open valve can be hit by a piston, sometimes breaking the valve or just bending the shaft. Also you have to be sure the new chain has the cam shaft and crank shaft properly timed. As I understand that that engine does not have timing marks on the chain sprockets. To test for damaged valves, remove the spark plugs and test the compression in each cylinder by cranking the engine while holding the compression gage in the spark plug hole. All the cylinder should have the same pressure within about 15 psi. A cylinder with damaged valves will not have any compression pressure. If you are unsure about the valve timing check into how that engine is timed. I don't have that information but if is out of time it has a very major effect on the engine performance and idle. I hope this gives you a place to start looking for the cause of the mis. Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

timing belt set set wrong firing to early.this a classic case of timing gone wrong.even one notch out will result in a badly running engine.bring it back and get it retimed on the belt/chain.adrian

2004 beetle changed head gasket. put back together running real rough and wont go over 2000 rpms

hi thanks for update the engine would run rough ifvalve timing was off a tooth however if in doubt ? recheck ! whenever you fit new belts or change always fit and work anticlockwise from the crankshaft ! this ensures the crank and cam side of belt and or chain is tight with the cam and crank t d c marks are aligned before you fit to other cogs and round tensioner did you compression test ? this also would verify lower comp's on each cyl due to valves not timed ie inlet+exhaust out of cynk ps do not ev engine too much just in case this is problem

Timing Chain

stop running it untill you get the chain fixed you will know when it breaks or slips as the motor will not run at all and will bend the valves this will require the motor to come apart and basicley be rebuilt -jeff
