Easier to diagnose that by driving but, I'd check the linkage adjustment from the carburetor to the trans, and make sure also that the vacuum modulator (if yours has one) isn't leaking internally.
Otherwise, there's a good probability that you have a problem in the valve body. It's very easy to get a check ball out of place or even a piece of lint from a shop rag in there or, debris from the previous problem is still lodged in a passageway..

If it seems to stay in 2nd too long and almost seems like it is going to slip you may have installed the heavy duty tow range shifting kit. yes they really do that-I had one and it drove me nuts. I would just take my foot out of it at about 30 and it would drop in to gear. Good luck!

I got a 1987 chevy s10 pick up truck 2 wheel drive v6 2.8l my transmission is not passing 1st gear ?do you know if the kick cable or tv cable needs to be adjusted .

Just about all you can do is, with the engine off, from under the hood open the throttle all the way and check if the TV cable is tight. And check the fluid level, smell if its burnt or look if its brown.

Other causes could be,
Sticky governor
Sticking shift valve
Worn bands

Many years ago my mom's first 4 speed automatic was a 84 S10 2.8 2wd. She did not know it was a 4 speed and the indicator was broke so she counted the clicks to find drive. She was driving in the hills in over drive and all the downshifting was too much for it (should have driven in hills in 3rd gear). After that the transmission would not shift out of second gear.

I have a 98 chevy s10 4x4 that when in drive the gear indicator "D" flashes. Does this mean anything? Thanks Mike

The flashing D is a trouble code from the electronic transmission controller. The flash pattern can be used to diagnose what the problem is. Something is not right with your transmission. Take it to the dealer or a mechanic and have it tested. Hope this helps, James Booth. PLEASE RATE THIS!!!

Rebuilt my 83 chevy s10 2.8 engine and it will turn over and we have spark and fuel it just won't start

You need spark, fuel, timming and compresion to make any car run. You say you have spark and fuel, but is the timming correct? double check to make sure that the dist is not out by 180degr. Also some times on a fresh motor, the rings may not be sealing yet. Put a very small amount of oil in each plug hole to help seal for compresion.

if all other gears work fine then it's just a matter of changing out the solenoid that controls that gear you will save quite a bit of cash you don't have to change the whole transmission
