Welcome to Fixya.
First, make certain that there are no other nuts holding the valve cover to the head. Using a rubber mallet, lightly tap the side of the cover working from one end of the engine to the other. Pull up slightly on the cover while you use the rubber mallet. It may take a few passes.
Avoid prying up on the cover with a screwdriver or pry bar.. If the valve cover is plastic, it may break. If metal, it could become bent out of shape.

How do i reset the check engine light on a 91 cavalier

You can remove the codes (and turn off the check engine light) by simply removing the negative battery cable for a minute or two. Make sure the ignition key is off before you do.

Whatever fault that turned on the check engine light on, if it is still there, it will turn on the light again. Then you would want to retrieve the codes and see about repairing the fault. Post back if you need help on how to get the codes to flash out by the light.

I have a '97 cavalier and it won't fire after I changed the plugs. I believe the wires are on the correct plugs. however, if I take a plug out and leave it in the wire, set it on engine block, the...

1 coil pack is for cylinder 1 & 3 . The 1st & 3rd....moving back from the belts. 1 is on the top, three on the bottm of the coil. 2 & 4 should be the same, 2nd cylinder, 2nd back from the belts & top on the coil pack. 4 the last plug & lowest on the second coil pack. PLEASE NOTE: , A Handyman's Service manual, from an auto store can VERIFY THIS. My last experience was with the 1987- 1991 GM "Quad" 4 engines. One of the other experts on "FixYa" corrected a mistake I made on a newewr model. SO I WOULD CHECK this advise to A MANUAL. I was wrong on the other one I answewred, & do not want to add to your frustration. I have looked around my textbooks, I do not have one on that car, I have given it away.

Depending on which engine you have you will only have a wingnut in the centre of the assembly to undo(5.8L). The rest are just clips around the edge of the aircleaner assembly. Lift the lower part of the clip upward to release. On the 4.6 and 5.0 engines the assembly is on the left hand side of the engine bay and the cover is held by clips only. Relase the clips and the cover can then be lifted high enough to remove the air filter.

My 1991 chevy cavalier VL/RS is over heating when I drive it just 2 miles. Nothing is leaking. What could be the problem?

Sounds like the easiest solution is the thermostat. Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine. Where it's clamped on is the thermostat housing. Remove that to reveal the thermostat.

I need to replave the key switch in a 1991 cavalier

First disconnect your negative battery cable. Then remove the plastic cover below your steering colum, and the covers that cover your headlight swith, turnsignal switch, ignition, ect. Remove the bolts that hold the steering colum to the dash, and allow it to lay on the drivers seat. Place a towel under the colum (to catch metal shavings), and drill out the two screws that hold the ignition in place.
Install your new ignition in reverse.
