Question about 1998 Subaru Impreza

Intermittant stalls & rough idle

About 2 weeks ago my 98 subaru impreza developed a intermittant stalling and rough idle problem. i changed the plugs, wires, & fuel filter. the fuel pump & pressure along with the head gasket are ok. i tried using fuel injector cleaner also. sometimes it will run brand new and other times it will start to give me problems within a mile on the way to work or home. it only stalls at low speeds, and will start again after it sits a couple of minutes. then, usually runs fine. my garage is guessing a bad fuel injector but i dont agree. any suggestions. thanks, keith

    I too have a 98 Subaru Impreza and I changed the oil and filter, fule filter, air filter, and spark plugs which had a lot of carbon build up. There is also black deposit starting to build up around exaust pipe and the check engen light is on. It might be the o2 censor b/c i think the engen is runing rich on gas b/c i can smell it strongly in the exaust

    I have been dealing with the same problem for months now. We have changed the Idle Air Control Solenoid, all three EGR valves/solenoids and the alternator as of yesterday. The car stalled on me again this morning. I saw another source suggesting to check the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF sensor). If I keep stalling, that will be next.

    I have had the same problem for 3 months now and have invested $1,700 into fixing it with no luck. The dealer is worst then useless

    i recently used gas treatment and fuel injector cleaner in the gas if that would cause any problems?

    I changed my coolant reservoir and fuel injectors on my saab 900se 1995 and now it backfires when I start it and stalls when idle

    idles rough, idle speed varies maybe 50 rpm. Sometimes stalls at idle, but I adjusted idle air control valve to speed up idle, so it doesn't stall. Replaced fuel filter, plugs, wires, temp sensor, O2 sensor, fuel pressure regulator, maf sensor, and cleaned idle air control valve. No change. Thinking about replacing injectors.

You might have leaking injector(s) or injector O-ring(s). It could be leaking inside the fuel rail feeding fuel constantly. The pressure could be OK because the computer compensates by working the fuel pump harder in order to keep pressure within specs. I have a similar problem in my 99 Outback, it rough idles at stops intermittently. I recreated the problem, I checked it in my back yard, turned it on, let it warm up. Then I put it in gear went forward stopping and going with the e-brake until it rough idled. I got out put some bricks in front of the tires and started checking around. I noticed when it rough idles the transmission makes a constant sound. I would describe it as a fast ticking, sounds electronic. I tried messing with the idle by adjusting the TPS. I noticed that when I set the TPS to where there was little or no signal coming from it the sound would stop and the idle would be normal. I haven't had time to check it again but I don't know what to think of it.

Clean throttle plate and housing, carbon build up is many time the cause of your problem, Subaru agents sell a good working cleaner for it. Take the air filter intake pipe off the throttle body and spray in in the open throttle body, and spray it also on the throttle plate, and let rest for about 15min. Then refit removed parts, and take the car for a road test till it's all warmed up, most of the time the problem is gone.

You are equipt with a EGR,if this valve is open at idle then you will experience rough idle and a stall at idle,

Stalls when car decelerats, then break light and all lights come


get the oxygen sensor checkde out and the maf sensor...sounds like a vacuum leak too...Stop driving it and get it looked at ..if you dont see any loose hose's that are small in dia.. .then check those 2 sensors i spoke of ....

1998 Impreza 2.0 non turbo wont idle properly


Lots of things it could be. Egr valve sticking, a hose that came off, a bad sensor for airflow, or even throttle position sensor.

Intermittent nature seems to point to something sticky or loose.

may not be the same but my one would not idle and run like a pig. checked the valve gaps in the end and the exhaust valves had closed up adjusted them and she now runs like a dream..

Subaru impreza uk model wrx stalls and low idle, hesition


try adjusting the throttle cable, its a case of loosening a nut, pulling the cable through a bit more and then tightening it back up, you find it on the right hand side of the engine block close to the exhaust manifold.
