It's a lot more likely to be your CAT converter. or maybe even your oxygen sensors. Do you have a service light on in your ranger?

The leak down test will tell if you have bad valves or bad rings. if the test was done properly and it did test ok then the problem may be the camshaft not opening the valve or valves . You may have a bad camshaft. If all the ignition parts were replaced by the dealer and there is no problem with the electrical side - no engine codes then I would be looking at the camshaft with a bad lobe.

I have a 1996 ford ranger 2wd 2.3 engine. when i had the code read it came up with p301 #1 cyl misfire. I was told to replace the coil pack, Which coil pack should i replace? the one clostest to the front...

I would replace all of the coil packs. if one goes bad, then the others usually follow. if you don't want to, i would say the one closest to the front. but you can always try different ones by taking it back off and putting it where the other neighboring one is. and vice versa.

Misfire on number 2 cyl

Cylinders are numbered from front to rear (grille to firewall) passenger side: 1-2-3, driver's side: 4-5-6. Firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6
Did you check by pulling #2 out while the engine is in idle to see no weakness from the engine? BTW your coil pack cost $80.

First thing you can do to eliminate a possible cause is trade the coil packs between 1&4, and 2&3. Check again and if 1&4 are now dead, then you replace the bad coil pack.

You stated that the plugs were wet, but didn't say from what. What did the plugs smell like? Oil, fuel, or coolant?

Please let me know what was on those plugs, as there could be other causes as well.

Excessive fuel consumprion - 2.3 L 4 cyl engine

Not for the home mechanic, but you could try a fuel system service. Basically they add chemicals to your fuel tank via a machine, and these chemicals clean the fuel system... fuel injectors, lines, filter, basically everything... that seemed to help my fuel mileage and also throttle response.
