Question about 2004 Ford Freestar

2 Answers

I have a 2004 ford freestar 3.9 The engine light started blinking and the engine was misfiring. The computer put out a code that cylinder 1 was misfiring. i have replaced the plugs and wires but still misfiring? Could it be the ignition coil? readout still says cylinder 1 misfiring.

does it have a coil pack in other words does each plug have its own coil

  • m_harris2001 May 20, 2011

    Yes

  • m_harris2001 May 20, 2011

Hi, the first step I recommend is to check for spark. You can do this by starting the car and then carefully pulling up the boot to the #1 ignition wire at the coil. If sparks are jumping inside the boot, you have spark and the ignition system is working.
i have a 2004 ford freestar 3.9 The engine light - jturcotte_504.jpg
1. Ignition: If there is no spark, shut of the engine and use an ohmmeter to check the impedance of the coil. Take the boot off, and connect your ohmmeter from the coil terminal to the engine ground. The resistance should be around 10-20 kohms. If not, replace the coil. If yes, the problem is the ignition module under the coil.

Now, assuming you have spark (which I believe you do, because the coil runs 2 cylinders, and you only have one cylinder that is misfiring), the problem will be a lack of compression or a bad injector (or possibly the injector wiring).

Note: I will provide repair steps once the troubleshooting is complete and the problem identified.
Also, if you do not have a multimeter, you can get one for $10-20 at radio shack or even Walmart. It will save you money overall--or maybe you have a friend that you could borrow a meter from.

2. Injector: The next easiest test to run is to see if the injector solenoid is clicking. You can do this by holding a long screwdriver to the injector and hold the other end of the screwdriver to your ear. With the engine running, you should hear the injector clicking. If not, you have a bad injector or a wiring problem. To determine whether the problem is the injector or the wiring, pull the connector off the injector and measure the AC voltage in the connector with the engine running. The voltage should be 1-2 volts or similar to that voltage of any other injector connector.
If the voltage is good, but the injector is not clicking, replace the injector.

3. Valves/compression: the last possible reason for a misfire is a lack of compression. The intake valve must open to accept a fuel/air charge, and both valves must be closed for the cylinder to fire. Sometimes an exhaust valve will burn and not hold compression. A blown head gasket can also cause this problem. The test we use to check the valves is a compression test. You can borrow or purchase a compression tester if you get to this point. Remove a few of the spark plugs including the cylinder that is misfiring. Screw the compression tester into the spark plug hole and crank the engine for a few revolutions. Record the pressure on the gauge, release the pressure, and go on to the next cylinder. If the pressure is much lower on any cylinder as compared to the highest cylinder, the cylinder head will have to be removed to correct the issue.

Please let me know the results of your troubleshooting and feel free to ask questions as you go.

Here is the ignition circuit. As you can see, the same coil that fires cylinder 1 also fires cylinder 5. Since you do not have a cylinder 5 misfire, I believe your coil is OK. If you find there is no spark under the boot of cylinder 1, please also check the boot of cylinder 5. If neither cylinder is misfiring, please check the trouble codes again. There should be a trouble code P0305 if cylinder 5 is not getting a spark.

  • m_harris2001 May 20, 2011

we have spark in first cylinder. He was wondering if it could be the ignition module. Will just one cylinder go out on that or will the whole thing go bad? He said it has to fire 6 times so he wasnt sure if just the one cylinder could go out.

  • Jeff Turcotte
    Jeff Turcotte May 20, 2011

No, if you have spark, then the ignition is good. You'll have to move on to checking the injector.

  • m_harris2001 May 21, 2011

We fixed the problem. It was a bad coil. it had a crack in the bottom of it under the #1 cylinder, The van runs great now.

Probable coil due to age. It is a coil pack unit. Runs about 70.00 from parts store and not hard to change. Another possibility is the fuel injector, it's connector or wiring to it from PCM. Have a mechanic do a compression test on the cylinder to eliminate a mechanical issue i.e. burned or bent valve or piston rings bad.
Good luck!

The van does have over 112,000 miles on it. Would the coil go out suddenly? The van ran fine then an hour later when i started it again it was misfiring. Also it has been raining alot here. Could that have anything to do with it?

Yes moisture plays havoc with deteriorated spark plug wires and there connections. jturcotte gave an indepth repair list. But most likely will end up being the coil pack or bad plug wires. Check for spark first.

  • m_harris2001 May 20, 2011

the plug wires are new. we just changed them.

we have spark . My husband wants to know if the ignition module could be bad. will it all go out at once or just the one cylender

  • Dirt Dobber

If you are getting spark out of all sparkplug wires there must be an injector problem or a mechanical issue with compression. signal at injector needs tested with a noid light and a compression test needs done on the cylinder to check for bad rings or a valve or cam lobe issue.

Ford freestar 2006, cylinder 6 code po301 cylinder 1 misfire

Standing on the passenger side.looking at the engine. Number 1 is the first cylinder on your left. Follow the wire to the coil. unplug it at the coil, lay the end of the plug close to the tip of the cap and start the engine. If there isn't multiple sparks, replace the coil. If there is , replace the plug and or wire. If you still have a misfire after that, do a compression test on number 1 cylinder.

Check that cylinder's spark plug wire for breakage or other wire contact with other plug wires. Do a voltage check on the coil and replace the spark plug in the offending cylinder. Cylinder misfires have also been known to happen when that cylinder has a vacuum leak.

ENGINE MISFIRE

There are few possibilities that can cause engine misfire issues. It can be issue with spark plugs or faulty spark plugs. Also get the compression test done for cylinders. If any of cylinder shows low compression then required, then that particular cylinder will cause misfire.

Also get obd codes scanned, the error code will let you know which cylinder is misfiring or all cylinders are misfiring.

These codes are making me lean towards the ignition coil pack.My stepson's 2001 Sable 3.0 v6 had one cylinder misfiring(5-code P0305),which shares a coil with cylinder 1(code P0301).I diagnosed it by trading wire 1 and 5 at the coil, and the code changed to P0301.You have codes for the two cylinders on the same coil,so this is most likely it.(these codes would also trigger P0300(Multiple Misfires Detected) and P0316(Misfire Detected First 1000 Revs)).
