Question about 1994 Honda Accord

2 Answers

Tonight when i turned the car on the belt(im assuming) started to squeel extremely loud. and then it would quit after about 10-15 seconds. While driving it would randomly start doing it again. Also, when down shifting or if i turn high RPM's while accelerating the battery light flickers on and off and will stay on if i down shift and coast to slow down.

Your belt is slipping. That is what is causing both, the squealing, and the battery light. Get yourself a new belt. If that does not fix your problem, then your gonna need a new belt tensioner. Hope this helps, James Booth. Please rate this. :)

About how much would it cost to have a belt replaced? I know the belt itself will probably cost around $30. I would do it myself, but i cant get my hands down in there.

It shouldn't cost anymore than 25 dollars for putting the belt on. If you brought it to a mechanic shop, they may just charge you for the belt and do the work for free. It shouldn't take any longer than ten minutes to put the belt on.

ok awesome thanks, and you dont think that the batt might be bad or anything? I suppose i could just go right up to the autozone and have it checked out.

Yes, you could do that. BUT, usually if the belt is slipping, it wont charge your battery because the belt is not turning the alternator. The alternator is what charges your battery. So if the alternator is not turning (because the belt is slipping) your battery light will come on because your cars computer is reading low voltage in the battery. BUT you can go to autozone to have all this checked out if you'd like.

I had it fixed yesterday. A guy did it for me for free. The alternator was really loose, which caused the belt to become loose.

Sounds like a few different issues here, one is if the battery light is flashing on and off it is time for a new battery or alternator, you can have them both checked at a parts house. The belt squelling issue can be a few things, bad belt, belt to tight, or you have a pulley that has seized up on you.My first guesses to both of these, but I would recommend checking them first is that the belt needs to be replaced, and that the battery is bad.

Does your car have air conditioning.? Most cars use the A/C compressor to dry the air for the defrost. It will also come on for a short time when you first start the car. With the engine running after the squeel has stopped , try turning the A/C on , If the squeel starts again , then I would think your A/C compressor is seized. Also . are you sure the 2 new belts are tight enough?

Is my car ok to drive with a broken fan or AC belt?

Open the hood and start the car with the a/c off. Do all the components running on the drive belt seem to be working ok?
Turn on the a/c and check to see if the symptoms repeat themselves...
If with the a/c off everything is ok, then you're probably fine to drive until you can get the a/c unit serviced.
If the symptoms are happening with the ac off, then it could be an idler pulley or a water pump or alternator, or powersteering.
Best bet is to open the hood and do a bit of inspection/investigation with motor running.

I would say that there is a bearing going bad either the alternator, waterpump, or idler. You should take off the serpentine and check the smoothness of motion of anything connected. What happens is that the bearing gets rougher and rougher adding more torque needed to turn. This in turn wears the belt and causes the squeeling. The squeeling is nothing more than the belt turning on the pulley without the pulley moving the same speed. In otherwords slip. This action wears the belts quite quickly.

This is not a symptom of a timing belt, but remember timing belts are only good for 60K miles and when on of those goes - so does the engine, especially if it has a over lapping piston valve clearance. So do this as regular maintenance.

A good test is to take off the serpentine and then run the engine, all should be quite. The check each connected item till you find the rough bearing and replace that accessory or change the bearing on the old.

I think the part was always bad, it just gets worse over time, and the belts get looser as they wear against the pressure - thus the noise.

Regards,

Doug

Squeels at start for first two seconds

The squeeling could be from a worn belt or if oil drips on belt overnight. Replace the belt first to see if that fixes it.Good luck.

Engine noise on area of pulleys and sometimes engine tries to sto

Don't know if this helps. Had squeel in belt area. Occasionally engine would stop when squeel got loud and sometimes engine would try to quit while going at various speeds. Found tensioner pulley was bad and changed it. Still squeeled and engine would stop when squeel got loud. This time while sitting in yard. Further checking found binding in power steering pump. Will be putting on new one tomorrow. Hope it works. Will update.

personally it is a really tight area to work in and if you are not experienced with mechanics i would get a pro to do it as if you misalign the pulley or break any bolts on it you are really screwed try jew the mechanic down as it is only about a 1 hour job if you know what you are doing

Hello,
I can't tell exactly what it is since I cannot hear it, but in most cases it's a belt. Check that first, or have a friend help you - one of you can start the car and the other one can look under a hood to search for the squeeling part.
