I would take it to Autozone or Oreillys and have them plug in a OBD II Scan tool and it should tell you exactly why that light came on

How to replace power steering pressure hose on my 2000 mercury cougar

Hello Selly Ukno,

It appears to be about a $40 purchase item...
(link to RockAuto below... to give you an idea of the approximate part cost.).

The application is easily accomplished by using Crow-foot tubing wrenches...

In my youth (50+ years ago) I purchased my first full set of Snap-On tubing wenches... and have never been sorry.

Easy job... merely messy... you need a large catch pan to keep most the fluid off of your garage floor... Spreading newspaper might be a great idea if you are as messy as I am...

Goo luck.

Alternator bolt sides stripped on 2001 Mercury Cougar V6

I see that your question has been unanswered for awhile. I will try to help. One thing at a time. For stripped threads, I am assuming that you may be describing the housing of the Alternator being stripped. This may be Salvageable by changing to a slightly longer bolt and using a nut on the other side of the case when the bolt pokes through. Or a device called a Helicoil can be inserted into a redrilled hole and it will accept a new threaded bolt.
Next, If you are describing a rounded off nut there are several ways to fix this. Sears has a wrench set that is suppose to grip many styles of nuts with one wrench. And sometimes a Metric will work when Standard wrenches are between sizes even when they have the special Sears wrench.
Thinking outside the box. On some occasions I have resized a nut using a Dremmel grinding attachment. Either reducing the 6 surfaces to the next lower size or changing to a flat 2 or 4 sided nut, as long as you can grip it, it really does not matter as long as you can remove it.
Sometimes a socket or wrench can be pounded on to temporarily grip and remove the part. Some people even grind the nut off.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

Why is the ''snowflake light'' showing up red in my car?

I have a '99 Mercury Cougar & I've been read somewhere that the snowflakes have to do with the outside temp. & traction. I think it's warning you that it may be slippery or icy. I've noticed that when it's +3 to about -2 or -3, the yellow snowflake shows up. Any anything colder than -3 shows the red snowflake. The other lights: the wrench comes up in yellow. That one has always turned on after a certain amount of km's & it's advising you that your car needs a check-up (that's when I know I should look into getting an oil change). You can turn this light off by holding down the two buttons above & below the 'clock' button. Hold them down together for at least 5 seconds & that wrench light should go off. Otherwise, there is a light for checking your breaks (upside down exclamation mark), low windshield fluid. I can't think of any other ones but I hope this helps.
