Question about 1999 Volvo S80

Open Question

Volvo S80 1999 - 2.9L SWM stopped working twice 20 months ago. Just turning off ignition would work. It just stopped working today. And previous solution does not work. Here is my plan: 1) swap fuse #22 2) disconnect car battery for 30 seconds 3) Change SWM UPDATE: tried step 1 - did not work.

SOURCE: Volvo S70 won't start - battery, generator, or other

usually multiple clicking (like a machine gun) does indicate lw battery voltage. did you get 11.9 volts with it running or car off? with running you should be over 13.6 min up to 14.0 volts. these cars have a fair amount of electronics with some residual voltage draws which may shorten battery life. 4 yrs is not too bad. i would consider replacing battery

SOURCE: Volvo 240 reverse lights don't work

Hi Sir

Checked the switch and plug? here's how :)

Yes it is the reverse light switch which is hooked up to your gearbox which needs to be replaced. Also it could be the plug going into this switch is a bit dirty or thorn (due to engine temperature and time wear) which in that case means that it needs to be fixed before replacing the switch.

Checking its actually the swtich so you don't buy it for nothing :)

Just to make sure that the circuitry is ok. Go to the gearbox (if it is front wheel drive transverse engine you wont need to go underneath) check where the gearbox and linkages are close to the revers there should be a switch n plug hooked up to it. Unplug it put in a piece of wire to short circuit both wires. Then turn the ignnition key on and if your circuitry is fine the lights should go on :) This means that its the switch for sure :) I hope that this helped your problem :)

SOURCE: how to reset service message on volvo s80?

2002-2007 All Volvo Models

  • The service reminder indicator lamp illuminates for 120 seconds when the ignition is first switched on
  • Insert key and turn Ignition Switch to position I
  • Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
  • Turn the Ignition switch to position II (within 2 seconds)
  • Hold the reset button for the trip meter pressed in until the original trip counter value blinks and is redisplayed
(For all vehicles 2003- a general yellow lamp will light when the reset button must be released.)
  • Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 4 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded
  • If the trip meter is already reset the reset button should be held in for a minimum of 10 seconds and a maximum of 14 seconds.
  • If the reset button for the trip odometer is not released within 4 seconds, the service reminder indicator (SRI) is not reset.

Go to the Fuse Box at the end of the dash, pull the fuse for the SWM (Steering Wheel Module) re-install the fuse and the controls should work. There is software from Volvo to prevent this from happening. learn more at RepairPal.com

Neither turn signal work on 1999 volvo s80, fuses are ok,

Remove the fuse that is labeled "SWM" in the fuse box, then re-install it. This should fix your problem. Have the software updated by a Volvo dealer to prevent this in the future.

How about the turn signals, are they working? If not, then pull the fuse for the Steering Wheel Module (SWM) to reset the module. There is software upgrade from Volvo to prevent this in the future!

Electric problem 1999 S80 2.9

I'm guessing that when this happens, all the steering wheel buttons stop working too? If so, the Steering Wheel Module (SWM) is going to "sleep". When you pull the fuse, this resets the SWM. You can get software downloaded into the SWM that will prevent this in the future. A good Volvo independent shop or a dealer can provide this for you. I would recommend a total upgrade of the whole vehicle, it may be just a little more, but everything on the car will be upgraded.
