Sound like a problem with the engine coolant sensor go to bad, exactly I dont know the location, but I suggest check some service manual (local library) or Haynes manual.

Some cars have a sensor in the coolant overflow tank. If you look at the tank there should be a low and full mark. Make sure the fluid is between the 2.

I have replaced radiator, fan clutch, water pump and thermostat and still running at 3/4 is that normal?


I guess that depends on what 3/4 is temperature-wise. Engines normally operate in the 180-210 degree F range depending on the thermostat and whether there is a mechanical or electric fan. Mechanical fans keep the temperature more stable. If you feel that after what you have done that the temperature indication is still too high, the issue may be with the sending unit for the temp gauge or the gauge itself. Have the coolant temperature checked with a second temp device if possible, otherwise, try the sending unit first and see what happens.

I have 2006 Chevy impala 3.5l and it's slightly overheating and I just recently changed the water pump and thermostat but it didn't change, and when I turn my heater on the air flow is very low.


check the lower (suction) radiator hose that it cannot collapse, they usually have a metal coil inside to prevent this. If you left this out when installing the water pump it could be the cause..What temperature is the gauge reading? You could have been running too cool before and now that the new thermostat is in its up to normal temperature.

Low airflow through the heater is a separate issue and can be caused by leaves in the ductwork, a blend door not opening/closing fully, clogged heater core (are you a smoker?) Good luck.

Edit: I had another thought on this.. the cooling system needs bled carefully, air in the system can cause symptoms like you describe, look for a bleeder screw on top of the engine somewhere and make sure to let the air out of the system.

Overheating indicator flashes, but has oil, water.


Hi. The contacts in the Coolant bottle get contaminated and then don't pick up the water level. Brige the contacts at the water botlle and start the car, if the coolant/temp light behaves for 5 min or so after starting the car, then change the coolant bottle/resevoir.

code p0118 refers to engine coolant temperature (ETC) sensor ---circuit malfunction===causes---coolant thermostat---wiring open circuit/short to positive---wiring short to ground---ground wire defective---ECT sensor.. The temp gauge works off a temperature sender unit separate to the coolant sensor and if it is reading 100 then it indicates an overheat situation in the engine . Probably why the engine light is coming on. As the thermostat is in the list of causes I would replace it as a precaution. The coolant sensor is what tells the CPU to turn on the electric fans to cool the radiator

Obviously it's temperature gauge light. Check for coolant level first. Then check for coolant leak. If coolant is leaking out of your car, the lower coolant levels in your engine will cause it to overheat. If you have your heater on and it starts blowing hot air instead of cool, your engine is low on coolant. This will cause to flash a warning light on your car's dashboard.

I replaced the thermostat in my 1998 subaru forester. How do I know if it is openning when it needs to? How can I test the pressure in the radiator? What should the pressure be in the radiator?Thank...


To test your new thermostat, do the following
1. Make sure your heater is off.
2. Start your engine and allow it to run for 6 to 8 minutes so it can reach the normal operating temperature.
3. Turn your heat tmperature select all the way up, and then turn the fan on high. You should hear the thermostat click when it opens up to circulate the coolant through the system. You may also notice your temperature gauge reading lowering.

The only pressure you may have in the radiator/cooling system is very minimal and caused by the coolant heating up.Whenever pressure starts building , it is purposefully relieved through your coolant reserviors overflow hose. Thats why you should never fill your coolant reservior all the way up. It needs to have 3 or 4 inches to allaw for expansion.

I have a 1998 Saturn SL2 DOHC with ~140,000 miles. The car runs great, but I am having trouble with the coolant temperature. When first starting the car up in the morning, the coolant temperature gauge...


When you said you replaced everything, did that include the temperature sending unit?
The temperature sensor just operates the cooling fan or fans for the radiator.
The temperature sending unit operates the temperature gauge in the dashboard. If that thing is faulty, the gauge won't work right.
If you did change the sending unit, it could be possible that the computor is screwing it up, but in my 41 years as a mechanic I never heard of it, when a computor goes, nothing works.

the fan comes on and off based on the "temperature sending unit" thats a thermal switch mounted on the radiator .. it is normal for the temperature to fluxuate as the fan turns on and off .. if it is allowed to get too hot before turning on then the temperature sending unit should be replaced ...while the car is moving the fan may never come on and isnt needed as long as air is flowing through the radiator .. as long as you are not loosing coolant then the temperatures are probably within proper range ... a sticking thermostat can also cause increased temperature range fluxuations .. that will show up as large swings of temp while driving .....

The temperature guage measures the coolant temperature, not the oil temperature -- the normal range is indicated on the guage.

Check your coolant.

97 saturn sl2 temp light flashing and low coolant light flashing what could be the problem ? coolant is full and the heat works.


If the temp gauge is reading normal, the lights are flashing, and the coolant level is full, the level sensor in the coolant bottle is the problem. I'm a service consultant for a Saturn dealer and I've run across this many times.
