The The Park/Neutral Position and Backup Lamp Switch is located on the left side of the transmission under the lever where the shift cable hooks up. (See picture)

They are not hard to change. Just 1 nut to remove the shift cable and lever (remove as an assembly - no need to disconnect the cable from the lever) and 2 screws holding the switch to the transmission. The hardest part is usually getting the electrical connectors disconnected. For some reason, GM likes to GLUE the [Blankety-Blank] things on. In this case, you will have to cut the wiring harness and install new connectors. This is so common that even AutoZone carries replacement connectors - check out this link: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/2...
Then you have to make sure you connect the wires correctly. The original wires are color-coded but the wires in the new connector are all white. Nothing that a little time and patience can't do. You will also need some wire connector crimping pliers/wire cutters to do this.

P.S. Please note that the link i gave you is for a 2-wheel drive Jimmy. It is the same switch and connectors for the 4X4. The main difference is that 4X4 makes it harder to work on the switch because of the front drive shaft being in the way. It can be done without removing the drive shaft, but I usually take the drive shaft out just to make life easier.

Column shift cars it will be at base on steering column I think. Floor shift cars it may be inside console at shifter. At some point this switch started being mounted on the driver's side of the transmission but not sure what year.

How do i use the neutral safety switch? In order to tow the Jimmy behind a motor home.

We'll if your taking a long trip I think for safety reasons remove the drive shaft put a plastic around the back York of the transmission with a big rubber ban or black tape then replace it what you get there because if the trans kits in to gear while the drive shaft is on you could burn it nor worth it it's easy to remove 4 bolts good luck

2001 GMC Jimmy with a 4.3L V6 auto trans. Will not turn over

The starter relay may have a bad connection, this is where your battery connects, and a power wire runs to the starter, also these have a ignition wire which is approx 14-16 gauge wire. The relay could be cracked or the contacts inside are going bad. But the other is the neutral safety switch that you mention. I would check these first.
