Question about 2003 Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible

1 Answer

Overheat 2003 new beetle convertible(bought new by me). check engine light comes on. then epc light, then overheat light. I have had to three different shops, three new sensors, two new water pumps. Last mechanic said the engine is not overheating but the car thinks it is, so it starts shutting down the air conditioning, then drives slower, then finally because it thinks it is overheating, it actually does overheat. I am very frustrated and have no more money to pour into this piece of ****. Any ideas?

In my country, most overheating issues on Volkswagen models are resolved by:

  • entirely removing the thermostat (not applicable in cold regions);
  • wiring the fan to switch on once the engine is running (with or without the A/C or heater being turned on);
  • replacing the radiator thermal switch for the fan to a lower temp.
As to the "check engine light", the correct procedure would be to have the engine management computer scanned for fault logs. The error codes would point to the probable area(s) to check/clean/replace.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

2003 Beetle turbo keeps running hot. Water pump, Thermostat, Sensor, and radiator have all been replaced.

I am going to ask what may seem to be a silly question. Does the guage go right up to the hot mark?
If so has the vehicle been checked to see if the engine is actually running hot or the if the gauge is just broken?
Does this car have the correct radiator cap fitted? If it has a radiator cap, it needs the correct one with the correct pressure release.
Another question, If it is a sealed unit, no radiator cap. Has the mechanic bled to system according to correct procedure?
If you haven't bled it correctly it will overheat, as you will have air pockets that will impede the flow of coolant around the engine.

Has anyone checked the head gasket?

ETC light is on, engine has problems starting.

The EPC (Electronic Pedal Control) is the "fly by wire" system that controls the throttle, it took the place of the cable that went from the gas pedal to the throttle body on VW. If this light is on and there is also a P0102, MAF (Mass Air Flow) related code stored in the vehicle's computer, the EPC may be caused indirectly from a faulty MAF. If the EPC is on and there is no other codes stored, it could be a faulty electronic throttle body or need to be re-programmed. The vehicle's computer must recognoze the throttle body so when replacing it with new or used it will need to be programmed at the dealer. Recently I replaced a MAF (a common problem on VW's) on a VW Golf and when I cleared the code the EPC went off as well.

The car will not start. It seems that it is getting no fuel. Engine cranks, sputters, dies. Sometimes it will start; sometimes not.This is a 2001 new beetle with about 125K miles. Has had tune up (new...

You need a trouble code to help you where to start looking. Take the car or have sombody scan for a code. They will tell you where to begin looking. It does not tell you what exactly the problem is, but will tell you which part of the engine is having trouble. It can be a sensor or electronic valve Such as EGR , or IAC valves.

Epc light is shown on dash board

Have you check to see if you have pressed your EPC button mistake? If not My tire pressure was low on my 04 beetle covt. on my drivers side rear. THis caused my EPC light to come on and the EPC to engage. But because of the location of the EPC button it is really easy to hit it by mistake I would check that 1st.

Red oil light flashing

This may be your oil pressure indicator as well as level. If you are losing oil pressure you want to get that looked at as soon as possible. If you have an oil pressure failure your engine will lose lubrication and will overheat and seize up. You would end up replacing your engine if you run it without oil pressure. I reccomend having a garage look at it possibly with a scan tool as well.
