Question about Kia Rio

1 Answer

I have a Kia Rio. The wheel was locked, so I jerked it left and right to unlock it, and I did, but now the key turns to "Start" without actually starting. The battery isn't the problem, since my electronics/lights come on, and it's in park. I don't know what to do.

It sounds like your ignition cylinder is broken. When the wheel is locked, there is no need to "****" it. You simply turn the wheel to the left, try and turn the key, if the key won't turn, turn the wheel to the right, try and turn the key again. By jerking the wheel, the wheel lock/cylinder must have gotten broken. I don't have the manual in front of my right now, but I believe it is just a matter of pulling the steering column covers off, and then removing the lock cylinder, where the key goes in.

How do I start my 2001 kia Rio without the key? My steering wheel is locked. I just put in a new ignition. And don't feel like paying for another one.

Hi Juan:
I understand how frustrating this can be, but if you can stay cool you'll get it working. Believe me, there are a LOT of times I've performed a task more than once because I didn't get it right the first time. It's part of the "do-it-yourself" learning process.
- My recommendation to you is to take it apart again, then check the function of the new key to make sure it's not broken. The key assembly has to be put in place so that it lines up ptoperly with the steering lock (and shift lock if it is an automatic).
- Patience and perseverence.
- Don't get angry at it. It is not alive and It won't know or care.
- Try to google the make, model, year, and the words "youtube change ignition Key assembly".
There are some excellent coaches out there.

What could it be when I can't get my key to turn the ignition ... my car was parked at work and when I returned to start it after work it wouldn't turn and my steering wheel wouldn't move.

It is possible that the steering lock is applying so much pressure on the key lock it will not turn. Try turning the steering wheel one way or the other way and then try turning the key.

Can't get the stearing to unlock with key in it , trying to start it jerked the stearing, still can't get it to unlock.

It sounds as if it is jammed, try turning it all the way to the left, as you try to turn the key to start, or all the way to the right, slowly, deliberately trying to turn the key to start. Sometimes the wheels are at an awkward position and they jam the locking mechanism.

Kia rio steering wheel is locked and won't turn

Okay, I just had this same problem with my 2009 Kia Rio and I did this. So not to down everyone's post on here -- everyone is correct -- by turning the steering wheel back and forth and turning the ignition key at the same time is a correct method. However, after talking to a Kia Serviceman, he told me you have to do it hard -- meaning turning it violently back and forth hard (madman style). In order to do this operation, I had my wife sit in the driver side and turn the key while I was on her left side grabbing the steering wheel and violent moving it back and forth like a madman, and after about 2mins of doing it the key turned over -- problem fixed. Do not worry about breaking anything; turning the steering wheel violently hard is a must -- this was told to me by a Kia service Rep. Remember -- have someone assist you; either turning the key or violently turning the steering wheel back and forth. Hope this works for you!!!!!

Car jerks to left w/no warning

My opinion, not a good car. But that is a different story. It would be easiest to bring the car in for an alignment. The technician will tell you what the car needs to do the alignment. But if you want to do it yourself then you will need to inspect all the steering componants (tie-rods,struts, lower ball joint, wheel bearings, brakes, wheels, tire wear, tread pattern, and tire pressure, and lug nuts (loose or overtightened). Good luck.

I have a 2006 Kia Rio 5 speed. purchased new. only 17,567 km on my car. for the last 2 days every time i get in it to start it the key will not turn. steering wheel remains locked. have to try about 20...

Could be a problem with the key lock itself or the steering wheel locking mechanism. Hard to determine without disassembling the steering collumn.
