Question about 1997 GMC Sierra

1 Answer

After running my 97 GMC Auto /4wd for a few minutes, pressure will build up. Fluid will leak from the fill tube. When the dipstick is removed, fluid will gush out. I have asked, and looked everywhere I could think but no one seems to have heard of this problem. Can you help?

It has 200k. I noticed after using 4wd for several miles during the snow last winter. There was a pool of fluid under the trans, I took out the dipstick and fluid poured out. A few months ago, I drained the trans, not noticing any debris, replaced filter, refilled, and it shifted fine. 4w worked too. As it idled, i took out the dipstick, and it did not flow out. After driving it back home, about 1 mile, I turned off the truck and checked the dipstick once more. It shot out once again. Any suggestion as far as cost of rebuilt vs. repairing this one? Thank You. -eric

Ther is most likely an internal leak inside the trans, possibly due to a defective seal in the hydraulics circuit. I would recommend draining the fluid into a clean container and inspect the fluid for debris or contamination. How many miles are on the GMC? Was the transmission ever serviced and when? Is the correct fluid level obtained?

Is it possible that the trans cooler is clogged? Something is building pressure internally and for the fluid to travel all the way to the top of the dipstick tube will require great pressure. I would be curious to see if the trans cooler was disconnected and by-passed, would this condition still occur. As for a replacement or rebuild your existing one, the norm now a days is to swap out the transmission with a rebuild and give your old one as a core. Keep in mind, the vehicle does have 200k, and if this repair was performed, the next valid question to ask is what else may fail or cause other issues. In short, if you feel the vehicle is worth it, then perform the swap. Transmissions are not that difficult for the professional, but are very time consuming and require a battery of special tools to tare down and re-assemble.

Where do one add auto transmision oil to a jeep grand cherokee 3.7l petrol model and what type do one use

The transmission on this truck is sealer, it doesn't have a fill tube or dipstick. To add fluid requires a scanner be hooked up to monitor fluid temperature and a special fill port used under the truck to add fluid.

How to Change transmission fluid on 2001 celica

Hi there, hope these few steps help:
  • Raise the car with a jack and support the vehicle with jack stands sufficiently rated to safely support the weight of the vehicle.
  • Place a large drip pan under the transmission.
  • Remove the transmission fluid drain bolt with a wrench. The drain bolt is located at the bottom of the transmission facing the pan. The pan is the large flat plate that covers the very bottom of the transmission.
  • Drain the transmission fluid into the drip pan.
  • Reinstall the transmission fluid drain bolt with the same wrench used to remove the bolt.
  • Lower the vehicle to the ground after removing the jack stands.
  • Open the hood and remove the transmission dipstick from the filler tube by pulling the dipstick. The end of the dipstick will be curved into a circle to allow a finger to slide into the circle to withdraw the dipstick.
  • Place a funnel into the dipstick tube and fill the transmission with new fluid by pouring the fluid into the dipstick tube.
  • Remove the funnel and check the fluid level with the dipstick until the fluid reaches the "Full" mark on the tip of the dipstick.
  • Start and allow the engine to run for a few minutes.
  • Move the transmission gear selector through all of the gears while depressing the brake pedal.
  • Turn the engine off and check the fluid level on the dipstick. Add transmission fluid if necessary.
Best of luck.

Where about do you put your gearbox fluid??

if it is auto there is a tube in the engine bay with a dipstick in it for checking the fluid level, remove the dipstick, put a funnel in the tube and top the trans up.
Check the fluid level with the engine running and move the selector lever through all the gear positions to make sure the fluid has filled all the tubes etc

The dipstick is where you fill it =) (lol) use a funnel too, otherwise you will stain your garage floor.

Where to put transmission fluid?

it goes in the fil tube with a funnel. Make sure you check it with warm engine and shift through all the gears. Then shut off and wait a few minutes for drain back. Do not over fill. Use Mercon V.

Where is the transmission fluid filler on ford fiesta 1996 auto

You need a medium-sized funnel; or a specially-designed transmission fluid filler funnel with a short hose attached to it (at Auto parts store for $5)... use a medium-sized funnel....

The filler tube is the same as the transmission dipstick tube.
Check the fluid level with the engine running, in park.
before adding fluid, turn off engine.

Insert the funnel into the tansmission dipstick tube, slowly pour in fluid (slowly!)..

In an emergency, you can make a funnel with paper or cardboard or sheet of plastic. ... and maybe duct tape...

Hope this helps!

I need to find where to add transmision fluid 2000 vette

Is it a manual or automatic trans? If it's auto trans, there will be a dipstick tube near the firewall on the passenger side. You fill the trans through the dipstick tube with a funnel.Careful not to overfill. If it's a manual trans, there will be a plug halfway up the side of the trans.Remove the plug & fill till it starts to leak out the plug hole.Be sure to use the recommended fluid in either case.Good luck,

Dipstick

If it is an automatic, which I assume it is since you're looking for a dipstick, it needs a special fixture to add fluid(Dealer or foreign auto mechanic) or check level. If it's a manual trans, there is a check/fill plug on the end of the transmission behind the driver's side front tire, probably takes a 17mm internal hex head socket. Use 75W/90 gear oil, filling the trans until oil just starts to overflow through the hole.
