Question about Mercedes-Benz C230

2 Answers

I have a 2007 MB C230 with approx. 61k on it. The other day the car went into Limp Home Mode, I'm assuming from what I found in my manual atleast. When trying to accelerate from a Stop the car barely had any RPM's and seemed to be stuck in 1st or 2nd gear. At the time this happened, i was so surprised and flustered but I did not notice any check engine light or warning lights on the dash. I was only a couple miles from home, made it home, parked it and the next morning the car drove fine. The only message on the dash now, is "Service A due". Since this occurence it has not happened again and drives fairly well but seems to shift too soon into the next gear. Any help would be appreciated!

If this vehicle is a europeon market version then you cannot drag any codes from it and on some models connecting a code reader will only throw the immobilisor on ,as this is classed as ilegal access to the OBDII which renders the car imobilised .Its a merc remember and i have had all this in the past ,it could have had a wet something or a dirty contact somewhere but knowing ??? Some vehicles come into limp mode even if a bulb is out and can only be reset by the dealer :So i would advise you contact the merc dealer and let them have a look for you .

Hello.

There are many reasons for your car to go into safe mode: turbo, air mass sensor, gearbox, EGR...

The best thing to do is a computer diagnosys. Check your ECU for errors and then we will decide the course of action.

You are referring to taking it to a shop to have it checked for any error or diagnostic codes in computer, correct? I am assuming there is no way we could do this ourselves?
since the vehicle has not gone back into limp mode over the last two wks since the first occurrence is it ok to drive or could we damage it further?

Many of todays cars have a mode called Limp Mode. The Motor and Computer talk to each other and if faults are found? The Limp Mode (( Short for Limp on home mode )) will be set in the Computer. Go to your local Auto Zone and ask them to Scan the OBD 2 fault codes with their reader. Or pay the dealer. It may be something really simple. My Check Engine light was on the other day because the Gas Cap was loose. This Scanner told us the problem and we tightened the Gas Cap. After 3 times driving the car with it tight .... The Check Engine light went off.

The check engine light went on on my 2003 MB c230. I took it for diagnostics and the shop shows a code of 201d-001 catalytic convertor is insufficient. It is a very pricey part. Should I have it rep

Hi,
Check the emissions warranty for your car - should be in the warranty and maintenance manual that came w/the owner's manual. The emissions warranty may be good 'til 100K miles and replacing the Catalytic Converter (CC) would be covered.

Also, call the MB dealer and ask 'nicely' about whether it's covered under a recall.

It could also just be a bad O2 sensor - not the CC. A failed 02 sensor can cause other issues or codes to occur.

But FIRST - have them reset/clear the code and see if it comes back....it may be a 'false-positive' and not really an issue.

BTW, don't disconnect your battery to reset the code - you may either lose your car stereo/codes or set off the alarm - unless you know how to fix both!

the best thing to do is to have the car scaned with the diagnostic computer to see what fault codes are stored.
acording to the fault code you'll be able to work out what's wrong with it.
I'm sorry i ca't be anymore helpfull.

engine manage lights and limp mode are activated from the engine AND the transmission faults
may be the mechanic is looking in the wrong area for the fault as it could be a TCM or wiring problem in the transmission
discuss it with MB headquarters technicians as the local shop may not have the experience to fix problems

heres the sad part of electronic controlled engines. i had a problem with my olds cutlass . one day it needed an egr, week later it needed an 02 sensor, few days later it needed a vss sensor.....................after talking to a QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN ~ i bought the 100 dollar ecm (brain) and the problems all went away. the ecm was bad and was giving out a different code everyday.
if yours went into limp home mode ( your chipset is loose or bad) wires to ecm can be loose / dirty or wet / an electrical spike zapped something in the ecm lots of possible problems. my camaro only goes into limp home mode when i take out my chip, or when someone kicks the ecm. of course i program my own chips, and leave the ecm sitting on the passenger floor. it sounds like you have a microchip problem on your ecm, making it go into limp mode

I have a MB C230 Sport 2007. My check engine light came on and now the car is stuck in 2nd gear. Anyone please help.

Place your car in park, wait at least 5 minutes then place your foot on the break, put your car in D. Now, take your gear shift and push it to the left for D- direction, you should see the number 1 show on your display console, then push the gear shift to the right, D+ direction, you will see the numbers go from 2 to 6 and then D. Turn the vehicle off and wait about 10/15 minutes and the light will hopefully go out, you will leave Limp Home Mode, and your car will drive properly and you will feel the gears shifting gently without the feel of the transmission slipping or the up or down-shift sounding out of whack. Good Luck.
