Question about 1991 Dodge Dynasty

2 Answers

I just got a 1991 Dynasty Dodge knowing it needed repairs. Vehicle tries to start, but doesn't. Had starter replaced and the battery is pretty new. I'm not sure if it's the fuel pump, I'm at a loss.

First check ignition:
extract spark, connect it (make sure it is grounded)
ask someone to start the engine and watch if there is electrical discharge
(do not touch it during this procedure! high voltage hazard! just watch)
second, check fuel system:
try to start engine several times, then extract spark and check if it smells with fuel

if both a ok - then try to "dry" sparks, extract all of them and warm up electrodes with lighter (until the metal become red), before inserting sparks - "vent" engine.. just try to start it for 20-30 seconds without sparks. Then try to start engine once more!

Need to check if you have fuel pressure and spark, then you can go from there, don't just throw parts at it.
Spray brake cleaner in the intake to see if it starts, if it does start then this eliminates the spark, if it doesn't then check for spark, get back to me and let me know

Check to see if you have power at the coil, this is where the spark plugs wires attach to, turn the ignition on, and check for power at each connector on the wireing harness to the coil, if you have power then the coil is bad, that such a old car I can't remember is your car has a ignition fuse, check ,

I am sorry, after reading my other post , I am wanting you to check the coil not the distributor, sorry, the coil only has one wire going to it (looks like a spark plug wire) and a plug from the wiring harness attached to it

After i start my dynasty and run it for a while and then shut it off it wont start right back up. I have to wait for at least an hour before it will start back up. I honestly don't know whats wrong.

Back in the old days that was a coil problem. I am not 100% sure of the name now - but i replaced the "electronic igniction control module"?, and that fixed it. Pretty simple. It's right on top, has about 6 easy to get to bolts and a plug. It's square. I got it from the local NAPA store.

you have to have 12.4 volts showing on your battery to even attempt to start your car,, you need to completely charge the battery , ( if you have a walmart near you, they will not only charge it for you, but they run a Load test , which tells how the battery holds up under a Load , such as when trying to start the vehicle,, ) I would venture to say that you have a bad battery ,, it only take one bad cell to make it pretty much worthless, Plus the alternator is being over worked trying to charge it as it runs the car for you after starting,, ( note, never disconnect the battery when the car is running to check to see if the alternator is working, that will result in bad problems , such as computer stoppage) once your sure you have a fully charged, good battery in place, use a volt meter to check ,, start the vehicle and place the meter probe's on the battery terminals,, you should get a reading of no less than 13.5 volts, and should see that up to 14.5 volts on the meter, if you do the alternator is doing its job.

93 Dynasty 3.3, driving today and the air bag light was staying on then I noticed my windows would not roll down nor would the heater fan run then the car overheated. I had replaced the cooling fan relay...

With a car that old & that many problems,
I would get rid of it

It needs too much work & I don't sense that
is your area of expertise

When you start becoming a butcher & wiring things,
instead of repairing them properly,it is time to quit

1991 Lexus 400 - engine doesn't start - battery seems charged - 12.3 volts - makes clicking sound only - doesn't turn over at all.

Is it one click or multiple clicks. If it's multiple clicks, it sounds like a dead battery. Voltage isn't always an indicator of a good battery, you need to have enough cranking amps to be able to start an engine also. If you have dash lights and it only clicks once, you could have a bad starter. An easy way to check this is to try and jump start the vehicle. If it starts up with a jump start, you need a new battery. If it still doesn't start up and it just clicks, you probably need a new starter.

Good Luck!

I have a 1889 dodge dynasty it starts and runs a few secands and turns off it restarts and the same thang happins it started this after the battery went bad could this be a securty prob

The alarm system, which is activated by hitting the auto-lock button, causes the battery to drain if set off. A pretty good deterrent for theft, but definitely not a owner-friendly feature.

You'll know that the alarm was triggered if, upon (your sad attempts at) starting the 1989 Dodge Dynasty, the "Alarm" signal to the left of the steering column flashes. It normally would flash a certain number of times, to denote "Alarm Set Off! I have drained the battery power in the name of Security!" But usually you battery will die first.

The only way TO FIX THIS PROBLEM: exit the vehicle. Place the key in the driver's side door. Turn the key once to the left (counterclockwise) to lock it. Then turn it to the right to unlock it and open the door. Enter the vehicle. Start the car.

You may have to try this a few times in order to be successful. If your battery has been toasted by these attempts (sometimes the horn will honk and headlamps light up and flash for added battery-drain quickness!) you may need a jump.

To PREVENT THIS STUPID STARTER/ALARM PROBLEM: Simply use your hand to lock the door. Do not push the electronic auto-lock button.
