Question about 1999 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

99 Sunfire (Automatic) Periodically, my the ETS (Enhance Traction System) lights up on my dashboard, even though the button on my gear shift has the ETS engauged. This results in very rough transmission when it shifts from 1st to second and second to third. I actually have to stop, shut the car off, and restart in order to reset it, but it can begin again at any time. What is this, and what do I need to do? If a part is required, hopefully I can get it from a wrecker - this is, after all a 1999 - I don't need new parts, I just need it to run.

The light comes on when the on-board computer system sees a fault in the system, it could be one of many sensors, you will need to have the system checked for codes, when the light comes on the computer records why it turned on the light . it is most likely just a sensor failing but you will need to get the codes to determine which one is at fault. auto zone should be able to get the codes for you just make sure to tell them you need the BCM codes as well as the PCM codes.......get the codes and get back with me and i will look them up for you.

Trak off light on

"Trak off" warning light is just informing you that you have your traction control toggled off. I believe on a 2000 the switch to turn traction control on and off is located on the left side of the dashboard, driver side. Although on my 96 and some others its a button located on the left side of shifter (Automatic models). Hope this helps!

What is the "Trac off"

It means you turned off the traction or pushed the ETS button on the gear shift.

The Enhanced Traction System is an all-speed engine based traction control system used by General Motors Corporation in many of their models. In some models, the driver has the option to disable this system by pushing a button marked "ETS". The system uses sensors to monitor wheelspin and reduces engine speed, upshifts or retards ignition timing to improve traction

What is the ets button for

ETS stands for Enhanced Traction System.
This is GM's version of Traction Control - it improves traction (to reduce likely hood of skidding) on slippery or loose surfaces.

What does ETS mean and how to use it

Hello! ETS stands for Enhanced Traction System. It is a system that limits traction loss by utilizing the anti-lock braking system (ABS) to keep the tires from spinning on slippery or loose pavement. If you press the button, and the ETS light is illuminated on your instrument panel, that indicates that the system is disengaged. To engage the system, push the ETC button on the shift handle, and the light should go off. If it doesn't, that could be an indication that you have an ABS malfunction and you should have that diagnosed.

I hope this helps and thanks for using FixYa!

ets stands for enhance traction control. You have a code in your computer. It can be numerous concern. you need to take it to someone who has a scanner to read codes. Most likely a ABS (antilock brake) code.
