Question about Plymouth Caravelle

1 Answer

Cannot locate an idle control valve for a 1985 Plymouth Caravelle with a 2.2 TBI; but, it looks like they make be able to be cleaned to preclude the sticking. My car currently runs bad at idle and wants to die, even with the tune up and idle and timing set to specifications.

There isno need to remove the valve to clean it, do the following procedure to cure the sludge problem.

To correct this problem get a can of Throttle Body cleaner (it is made by CRC) from the local auto parts store, spray it into the air intake of the engine while it is running until you have used about half the can, you will need to hold the idle up while you do this, it will try to stall, after this shut the engine down and disconnect the Negative (-) battery cable for 5 minutes. The intake is now clean, if you continue to have the idle speeds problems you may need to seek the help of a professional.

Where is the idle positioning sensor located on my 94 chevy 1500

there is no idle position sensor, there is an iac, idle air control stepper motor that is located on the tbi, throttle body injection unit, there is a tps on the tbi as well, throttle positioning sensor, so if you are looking for an idle adjustment it is not possible to just turn a screw, first you should check for vacuum leaks,a vacuum leak will cause the idle to go up,the block learn will also be up past 128,use a smoke machine and smoke the engine to help detect a vacuum leak first,no leaks found then reset the throttle body set screw to zero, clean the tbi with a good carb cleaner and a little brush,no biding, check tps for correct value, from 0.6 to 0.8 volts at close throttle and up to 4.8 volts at wide open with no voltage drop or glitches, make sure the pcv valve is working properly,if you have idle quality problems make sure all is good, hoses, cap rotor wires plugs, leaking valve seals can contaminate the air intake and play a role in extreme cases. check plugs for a build up of carbon which indicates this. good luck

I need a steering colum for a 1985 plymouth caravelle what other car can i use to replace it with.

1985-1988 Caravelle or Dodge 600, these were a very limited production, and were replaced by the equally unsuccessful E-class.

How to i adjust the idol speed on my 1985 cutlass supreme? I do not have a gauge for rpms.. but it just sounds and feels to high.. i've cleaned the throttle body and everything.. what piece do i turn or...

On some models the TBI cannot be adjusted .Usually these functions are carried out by the Idle Air Control valve ,the Throttle Position Sensor and the power control module.Any kind of adjustment will cause false signals to the PCM.I would take it to a local mechanic and have him test your rpms at idle that will give you a rough idea where running at.That way you can find out what the recommended rpms are and see where you stand at that point.most of this can usually be tested at your local autoparts store depending what area your in.

Where to locate and clean throttle body

Hi!!
TBI is the part where the plastic duct coming from the air filter housing mates the engine. The part where the clamp attaches on the engine side is the TBI. The TBI has attached the Throttle Position Sensor TPS and the Air Intake Control Valve AIC,
A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

Engine wont idle on my vitara jlx 1993

Check your air idle control valve, check for the wires to be fretted or broke, and also check the vacuum lines to it.
The air idle control valve mey be dirty and a good cleaning with throttle body clean through the throttle body may help clean the carbon build up.
If there is a Auto Zone, have the Vitara scanned for a DTC code.
Here is a few things you can do.
Checking  the IAC (it's called the ISC on Single Point TBI)
It is screwed to the throttle body, and has a 2 pin electrical connector) with an Ohmmeter - the solenoid should be 11 to 14 ohm.  If not, replace.

To test the IAC / ISC
Use a Duty Meter, and adjust the air adjust screw to get 50%.  If the revs are not right at that point, adjust some more to try to get them correct, but if the duty goes below 28%, a vacuum leak is highly likely.

Air Adjust screw for TBI / Single point   look on the Throttle Body, just below the fuel line and maybe an inch to the left of the Fuel Pressure Regulator - it looks like a cross head screw into the TB.

The 8v (Single Point / TBI) uses a throttle opener device to open the throttle extra during starting.  When the engine starts to run, a vacuum line is applied to the device through a vacuum servo valve, controlled by the ECM. The vacuum closes the throttle opener, to bring the revs down to normal.  The ECM will operate the VSV after about 10 sec from engine start (less if the coolant is warm).

Try these things for now and keep me posted. good luck.
