You need to probably change the thermostat as it can stick closed intermittently causing this or you might want to have a block check done on the cooling system to check for a possible head gasket starting to go bad.also you may want to check to see if the engine cooling fan is working when this is happening.

1997 Dodge Avenger Missing Radiator relays

It is common for some relay positions to not be used on many cars. These are places for relays that control things that your vehicle is not equipped with. For example, if your vehicle is not equipped with fog lamps, the spot where the fog lamp relay would go will be empty and there will be no connectors in that spot either.

As for your overheating problem, it needs to be properly diagnosed. Most Dodge engines are VERY unforgiving when it comes to being overheated. Even if it was not caused by a blown head gasket, there is a really good chance that it has one now.

Combustion gasses in your cooling system can keep your fans from running, because the gasses push the water down and away from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor that tells the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) when to operate the fans.

Your Avenger is actually equipped with four different fan control relays. It is very unlikely that all of the relays would be bad (or missing).

Proper diagnosis required.

Every two days coolent in reserve has to be filled

Antifreeze has an odor. With the engine idling sniff the tailpipe, if you smell anitfreeze you have a situation where antifreeze is getting into a combustion chamber and is being passed out the exhaust. This is not good and requires an expensive repair ASAP. If no odor there, unscrew the oil fill cap, turn it over and look for foam. If it is foamy then your coolant is getting into your lubrication system, again not good and a repair is needed. If it is not being sucked into the engine, then it is leaking somewhere and that should be easy to spot. A green or orange puddle where you park.

I have a 1997 Dodge Avenge and can drive it for about 2 miles and it starts sputering and dies

check the crank sensor next to or behind the main crank pulley, these are known to fail when hot and cut the engine out until it has cooled for a few minutes.

My 1997 Dodge Avenger's engine won't start

Try cam and/or crank sensor. If crank to cam timing isn't detected properly it'll crank all day but won't start. I had similar problem on my 2.5L V6 Avenger....drove home fine, no engine light, next morning it cranked, but wouldn't start. The crank sensor was faulty.
