Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

I have a 97 Cavalier 2.2L, and i just replace the clutch on the car. Thinking that i will be saving, I let this guy friend of mine put the clutch in for me. I was told that to get to the clutch you have to drop the transmission. well to make it short the guy did put the clutch in. However , the car turns but does not crank over and it makes a loud grinding noise only. I want to know if anyone can tell me what could possibly be the reason why? So i dont waste any more money for parts that is not the reason. Thank you

Could be that the starter is in wrong or he put the flywheel in backwards. Turning and cranking over are the same thing. So likely you're saying it turns but does not start. Probably in the long run, you are better off having a reputable shop look at it. No telling what they will find.

Could be the starter isn't seated properly, some vehicles have a sheet metal shim spacer between the starter and engine block to align the teeth on the starter and flywheel. Make sure if it had one he put it back in. The starter could be going bad also.

97 cavalier. I have reverse but it doesnt want to go forward when put in drive and given gas

Check the fluid level first. If it is OK, then the front clutch pack is not engaging. Time to rebuild the transmission.

Try cleaning the throttle body and butterfly plate. If that doesnt work, replace the IAC (idle air control) motor.

My '97 Cavalier seems to be having clutch problems. All of the sudden the clutch pedal has started sticking when I push it down and I can hear a grinding kind of noise. Can this just be an adjustment...

It sounds like you have a clutch slave cylinder leak. I just replaced mine about two months ago and only payed about 80$ for a new slave cylinder.

Does that have an electric clutch? I'm thinking it does ... I'm not really the guy to give you a comprehensive answer on this ... but check the power to the clutch.

Where can I find a downloadable dealer service manual for a 1997 chevy cavalier? In specific the slave cylinder for the clutch needs to be replaced and I'm wondering if the whole motor has to come out to...

The motor doesn't have to come out, but the transmission does. You might as well put a whole clutch kit in it while you have the trans out. It will save you headache further down the road.

How much is it to replace a transmission on a 97 chevy cavalier

need to know engine and transmission type --- but unless you do it yourself it will cost more than the car value. look for a local guy working out of his garage or have a gearhead friend help you--------it really isn't that big of a job, but you will need tools, jackstands, etc and allow yourself 3 days at a comfortable pace so do a decent job and the necessary back and forth trips to the parts or tool store. approx 1200.00 usually covers it to have it done by shop with rebuilt or rebuilding yours.

I had the same problem. The gear was slipping out and grinding.. Talked to all bunch of people...enough said. You want to save money..well ..go to a local junk yard ( i know what you are thinking ) i am not a big fan either...but if you are patient and lucky you will save 1000 dollars. The guy that posted the info in regards to the trans numbers and match codes is absolutely correct. They are all of the same, as he described the year gap. I went to a local junk yard and for 110 dollars i got a trans from a 1998 vw cabrio with 64k miles ( currently 98k on mine ). Paid a 30 dollars for a 90 day guarantee, and 100 dollar for them to take it out and drain all of the fluids. Have you know that on line people were asking 900 to 1200 for the same trans. Mechanics wanted 1500 dollars just for the gears rebuilted. Paid a friend of mine 250 dollars , and now have a great trans, no problems, like new. If you do decide to have it done, i suggest you buy a clutch kit, you will have a bearing ,clutch and adjustment tool , do not pay more than 160 dollars, shop around. I will also suggest you get a new ( rebuilt) flywheel 140 dollars , usually a core refund of 80 dollars, final cost 60 do this, the car will feel like new and for the mechanic is not any extra work, because he has to take out the flywheel and the clutch when installing the transmission or repair the gear not let tell you otherwise...good luck
