Question about Ford Taurus

2 Answers

For a week or so I heard a noise after I started my high mileage 1996 Ford Taurus wagon in the morning. I thought it was a loose muffler. Returning home one night, the powersteering failed 500 feet from my driveway(lucky). When I looked under the hood, I noticed that the serpentine belt was detached from the various "wheels" or rotors. I was told that usually this doesn't happen without a cause. When a mechanic gave a quick look, he said that my water pump probably failed. Does this sound like a correct diagnosis? Ted

Yes, what you do is check each pulley for play. If the water pump pulley can tilt, the belt will come off. It could be a different pulley, so I would check them all myself before repairing.

I need a new Trans for a 1996 ford Taurus GL wagon.

The best way is to use the vehicle VIN number, here is a link to a Ford Vin Number Look-up site, that will tell you the transmission code and the type of transmission you have:

1996 318 tds diesel hard to start in mornings returning diesel

Disels are simple, if they have fuel and compression at the right time and in the right quantities they will run fine. You might just have a blocked filter. If the mileage is moderate your injectors or pump might be the problem and the symptoms might have started quite quickly. If the mileage is high, it could be a worn engine in which case it would have got worse over a period of time and you might be using oil. Have a diesel specialist look at the injectors first, then the pump and the engine last unless he can see something obvious.

sounds like a dead battery, have battery tested or trun on headlights if you have bright headlights then its not battery, check connections and starter it may be bad start there, good luck.

1996 Ford Taurus has been having problems starting up

Get a new battery - I did and it works OK.
Make sure it is the high output type as used in Jeeps etc. Check spec book for it in shop.
