Question about 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

001 Mercury Grand Marquis with 116,000 miles has starting troubles. Problems began in 2010 - turning the ignition the car would turn on and then stop. Had a tune-up in summer 2010 and when the problem came back, a coil was replaced in February 2011. The problem has returned. It seems to happen mostly in cold weather or if car has sat for a few hours. The only way to get it to work is to turn the car on and wait 3-5 seconds before igniting.

Thanks for this. There are two things that I usually do with the car to get it started:
    1) Hold down the accelerator
    2) Wait 3-5 seconds with just the battery turned on before turning the ignition

Can I rule out having the ignition switch being an issue or the belt on the alternator. Those were two answers I found to generic concerns, but not necessarily for a 2001 grand marquis.

Thank you for your time and if it wasn't too much trouble, would you be able to ballpark what a new fuel filter installed at commercial garage (pep boys) would run?

Welcome to Fixya

Try to hold the accelerator down when you start the engine. If engine stays ON while you are holding down the accelerator then the problem is the fuel filter. You need to replace the fuel filter.

Thank you for using Fixya!

i am not seeing any ignition problem there. because the car start right away when you switch the engine to start position. This is more of a fuel delivery problem. the price range for the fule filter would be 10 to 15 dollars.

1999 grand Marquis will quit starting randomly without any cranking either. It will start if the car and steering wheel is shaken vigorously while turning the key. Why?

I would guess that one of the wires to the ignition switch or the switch itself is intermittent. Replacing ignition switch will likely fix it.

I am unable to turn the key in the ignition of my 87 Mercury Grand Marquis. The steering wheel is not locked. I think the tumblers are miss aligned. I bought a new Lock cylinder but can't get out the old...

Make sure the gear selector is fully in the park position. If it is not, you will not be able to turn the key to the position that locks the steering. This is by design, so that if someone has to turn the key off because of a runaway engine, they don't inadvertently lock the steering.

Will the car start when someone jumps it off with another car?
If so a dead battery or dirty terminals is more suspect than the alternator.
