Question about 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1 Answer

I am going to replace the fuel pump/sending unit in my 2001 Chevrolet Silverado in couple of days. I am going to go the route of removing the bed instead of dropping the fuel tank. My question is how many bolts (4, 6, or 8) are located underneath the truck, are any of them different sizes (if so, what sizes are they), and will I need a ratchet extension tool? I have been told that this is the easiest way to do this job since I do not have a lift to put the truck up on. Any and all advice is appreciated. Thanks.

YOU will need 18mm socket, extension and depending on type of hitch a swivel. there are 8 bolts i believe two at front and two at back(per side) be sure to disconnect light wiring

Fuel pump

The gas tank has to be dropped to the ground, or the bed removed, to gain access to the pump and sending unit in the top of the tank.

How do drop the fuel tank to replace the fuel pump on a 2001 chev silverado 1500?

some times it is easier to remove the bed.

jack up truck

unhook the fuel inlet hose and vent

reach threw fender and unhook fuel lines from top of tank and wiring plug

remove bolts from fuel tank straps ( the ones closest to drive shaft )

lower tank

sounds easy but is is harder then it sounds expecly if the tank is full of gas.

get a few friends over and pull the bed.

Fuel gauge works,,,then dont, and low fuel light comes on

the problem is with the fuel sending unit it is losing signal. the sender will need to be replaced this will require dropping fuel tank. or removing bed to gain access to top of tank.

2001 Silverado fuel pump

I just did mine and lifted the bed on the drivers side. I used a 30" 4X4 and a 24" 4X4 with a blot pounded into the end and head cutoff. This engauges into a hole in the cross member infront of the wheel. A hydraulic jack and 2X6X6 blocks to jack the bed up. Taking off the wheel makes it easier. Make sure you only loosen the passengers side bolts (4 on short bed).

Process to change fuel pump on 2001 chevy silverado 1500

take the six bed bolt loose and then take three buddies slide the bed back put in the new pump slide it back n place and put the bed bolts back in. if u drop the tank u can easily break the hard plastis lines that go to the fuel tank. u only have to take the fill lines and taillight wires loose this way its alot quicker, and easier.

if it is the fuel level sending unit you will have to replace the pump because they are a 1 piece assambly. it will be a task to change too as you will need to either remove the truck bed or drop the fuel tank to get to it.

Fuel sensor gauge

you will need to replace the fuel level sensor.(sending unit) it is in the tank and is hooked to the fuel pump. you can buy seperatly from pump. you may finf it easier to remove the bed if you have some help. it is six or eight bolts and harness unplugs then you can get right to it.

well the pump is in the fuel tank and it depends if the tank is full or not if it is its very heavy and you will need a jack and 1 other person to help you there are two fuel lines to unhook and the electrical connector. When replacing it replace the entire fuel pump/sending unit and the electrical harness or you will end up having more problems also spend the extra 15$ and replace the fuel filter

Fuel gauge stopped working

Can't say for sure since you did not include year of your car but more than likely it's the fuel sending unit that requires replacement. Some years you can replace just the level sensor on the fuel sending unit but both repairs involve dropping the gas tank and opening to remove the fuel sending unit.
