Question about 1998 Dodge Caravan

2 Answers

1998 Caravan 3.3 When 3 is selected with shift all is well but cannot get above 50 mph on freeway without going above 4000 rpm. Previously had codes P700 transmission and P0734 "Gear 4 incorrect ratio". And gear 4 was locked out. Replaced all fluid and filter. Filter was a bit gucky but no metal. No codes now but seems to be confused and go directly from 2 to 4. Has problem with down shift when entering freeway so I plan to avoid that. I'm new to Caravan, hope someone has seen this before. The transmission on Caravans of this age is well known for being a total POS. In your case the valve body is malfunctioning and the wrong elements (brake bands and clutches) are activated so the resulting gearing is all over the map.
Either have it overhauled using a new valve body or replace the transmission completely with a good SH one - a new one would cost way too much.

The problem may not be an issue with caravans but with automatic transmission in general. One problem may be the solenoid. It is the part that is related to engaging the gears. IT may need cleaning or you have to replace it. You also had your fluids replaced. The valves for the gears may still have debris or dirt which needs to be cleaned. Check also the wiring harness connected to the transmission for bad wires or loose connections.

What does a shaft speed sencer do for a 2000 cirrus

According to Stratusphere.net, "Symptom: The car won't shift out of 1st gear. The 'Check Engine' light is on.

The speedometer doesn't work for this one. You're only able to go about 30 MPH without going above 4000 RPM.

Likely Cause #1: The Output Shaft Speed Sensor went bad.
Likely Solution #1: Replace the sensor (Part #4800879)."

The good news is that they are relatively cheap if you can install them yourself.

My 1998 Tracker 2 door 4x4

Is this a manual or automatic transmission? When was the last time the fluid was changed? If it's a 4 speed and a 4 cylinder engine than that could be the right RPM. It could also be the overdrive is not working. Some SUVs have a overdrive override button on or near the shifter.

Transmission trouble?

is rpm at 4 means rpm at 4000. if so assuming everything is okey in the transmission. check your Vehicle Speed Sensor it looks like your not getting the signal which tells you computer to shift at overdrive when speed is over 50mph.

DEFINITE LURCH IN 1ST AND 2ND GEAR,

This may apply. ...............................

Carry out the adaptation drive cycle road test:

Note: This process must be carried out in normal mode (not sports mode). On a flat road, the transmission fluid temperature must be above 60° C (140° f) and below 100° C (212° f) (vehicle at normal operating temperature will ensure that the transmission fluid temperature is above 60° C (140° f)).
9. Accelerate from rest with light throttle (do not exceed the upper rev limit in appendix 1). 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 shifts must occur with engine speed between the following limits:.
Note: Do not move the accelerator pedal during shifts.

• 3.0L VIN ALL 1800 - 2000 rpm
• 4.2L N/A Prior VIN M96321 1450 - 1600 rpm
• 4.2L N/A From VIN M963221550 - 1700 rpm

10. Continue to accelerate gently to 50 mph (80 km/h) so that transmission shifts into 5th gear.
11. Go into overrun and let the transmission shift down into 4th gear without braking.
12. Brake gently to a standstill and hold footbrake on for at least 15 seconds.
13. This process should be carried out at least five times.

When I am up to 65mph on freeway.the gear wont shift if I keep going up to 80 on the automatic 4 bang tran.IT goes upto 4000 rpm,I dont know if I should keep accelerating because it seems like it should...

well, unfortunately you have found the limits of your pickup, my friend. I believe the only automatic transmissioin that was available on your vehicle was a 4 speed. Now, at 65 mph it should be cruising around 1800-2000rpm or so.
you have got a pickup, not a ferrari unfortunately, and to save on cost and to ensure strength of the gearbox chev decided NOT to put an overdrive in this transmission (this would mean a 5th gear). This saves you money and ensures when you are carrying that extra load in the back, then you are not stressing the internals of the gearbox.

I hope this puts your mind at ease.

You could have a bad valvebody in your transmission or a bad pump in your transmission or your clutches are bad. In any case you have a bad transmission. Please rate my answer.

Shift problems with 94 eldorado touring coupe

I'd check & lube all kickdown cables in the area of the throttle body, as well as follow any to transmission and lubricate well there too. It almost sounds like something may be seized and holding into lower gear.
