Common Car Noises and Their Likely Causes Noise More Details Likely Cause Fixing It Clicking noise while turning Starts faint, gradually becomes more noticeable until very loud Failed outer CV joint (constant velocity joint) due to torn boot (most likely) or old age Replace either the whole axle assembly (recommended) or the outer CV joint Water pump noises Difficult to diagnose because of water pump's location Noise usually caused by damage to the bearings in failed water pump Only cure is replacing it. If possible do it at the same time as a timing belt replacement to cut down on labor costs Squeak or squeal from an engine belt Loud, high-pitched squeak or squeal Belts either need adjustment or replacing If belts only squeak when damp, they probably just need adjustment. If they squeak constantly, they probably need to be replaced Exhaust heat shield noises Rattle that you hear when car is idling Damaged heat shield Replace heat shield

My 1998 sebring 6cyl makes a metal on metal noise on the side of my engine by the belts i tried greaseing all the pullys and i used belt noise sparay but it becomes lower and then it becomes higher ???...

sounds to me from the brief description like you have either a water pump rattling, or a timing chain coming slack. Is the noise coming from the alternator? Never grease pulleys, ever. also the stop squeak spray is bad for your belts. Don't know why they even sell it. If you listen carefully you may be able to pin point the rattle. Is this a tick tick tick, or a rattle rattle rattle? Does sound like a water pump rattle or timing chain slap though. Hope this helps

How do you know when its the timing chain on a 2001 chevy cavalier

left side? when talking about left and right on a car its always referred from the drivers seat... so drivers side is left passenger side is right. if the noise is coming from the passenger side it could be a timing chain but more likely to be a water pump or idler pulley for the serpentine belt. take off serp belt and start car. if noise is gone u have a bad pulley or alternator or power steering pump.. hope this helps

How do i replace a water pump on a 1994 mazda protege

1.u need to jack the car up so u can take the passenger tire off. align the crank timing mark to top dead center with the front timing belt cover. 2. u need to loosen the crank bolt with am impact wrench, or secure the flywheel and lossen the crank bolt .3. u need a 10mm short 1/4 inch socket/or wrench inch to loosen the (4) water pump nuts. 4. i now recommend u loosen the alternator, u do not need to remove it. 5. if u have air-conditioning..i suggest u leave it on. remove the belt 6. powersteering can be loosened as well, 7. once u remove the crank pulley..u can take the 10 mm blots out of the timing belt/water pump covers.u will also need to support the engine(under the oli pan is ok) and remove the upper passenger side motor mount. 8. u will now see the timing belt. u need to remove it by loosening the tension pulley (14 mmm bolt) .u should make sure the crank is tdc. but u just need to make sure that when u re-install the new timing belt(whichu better do when u do a water pump)...,make sure the exhaust and intake cam shaft pulleys are aligned.(exhaust pulley is front side of car, intake is rear.)(e-for exhaust,i -for intake....they're aligned at center of each other (center of engine)now i must take a pee,brb in a minute. remove timing belt now 9. remove (5) 12 mm bolts from water pump. clean surface. 10. re-install in complete reverse order.i do recommend u use a black rtv gasket sealer on ur water pump gasket.(screw manufacturers statements on this use). tart with taking your two belts off, remove motor mount, remove power steering pump, crank pulley, next remove timing belt covers along with tensioners. Remove valve cover. timing belt tensioner, now you have access to the water pump. remember your timing marks before you remove. When installing timing belt hold camshaffts with vise grips to align. installation opposite of removal.

Drain all the coolant.
Jack up the car on the front passenger side.
Remove the passenger side wheel.
Put a jack under the oil pan.
Detach the engine mounts on the passenger side of the car.
Remove all external belts.
Remove the upper timing belt cover bolts
Lower the engine using the jack.
Remove the water pump pulley. (3 bolts)
Remove the upper timing belt cover.
Disconnect the coolant line running across the front of the engine from the water pump. (2 bolts on a flange)
Pull the timing belt.
Pull the water pump.
Installation is just reversed.

If you need images, go to your local library. I never bought a manual, where is the fun in that? LOL plus everything I need to know can be found on the internet.

1993 Isuzu Rodeo engine tick at idle and other

a very common problem with these engines is a clicking sound in the engine, it can be a slight annoying click, to a loud knocking sound. I end result is usually the same, replace your timing belt and tensioner. I researched this problem when i bought mine, and it was knocking. i replaced the timing belt, (which was loose) and actually took the tensioner apart and cleaned it (not recommended for the mechanically challenged). new tensioners may be tought to find. when i put it all back together, it ran smooth and quiet.
