Check to see if you have a MAF sesnor on the air intake. If yes, clean the exposed MAF sensor wires (inside) with spray carb cleaner. Do not touch the heated wires though, just spray several times. It will fix a lean running condition.

There should be a purple wire with white tracer from ignition module to computer. That wire carries rpm signal to computer, w/o that signal, the computer won't ground the fuel injectors. With the engine cranking, you look for a dc pulse on that wire. If you have a digital multimeter that has a tach--duty cycle or dwell setting, it should react to a dc pulse.
My info on your model year, isn't that great.

My 2002 S40 shakes when the car goes up a steep hill and smooths out when the road levels.


Most up hill problems are Ignition related,such as
individual cylinder coils or a coil pack, depending on
what your car has.

You may or may not have a check light on the dash

A more violent & more sudden, somewhat similar lack
of up hill performance ,would be the EGR Valve.

If you never had any trans issues since the car was new,
& I don't think that is the case with the mostly under load
& up hill issues,I would change the trans fluid again,not
have it flushed,just change it & add,LUBGARD in the RED
BOTTLE,no other product or brand.

I will assume your spark plugs have been in the motor less
than 3 years or 60,000 miles

Also not really related but effects fuel trim or adjustment,is the
front O2 Sensors,the ones closest to the motor before the
converter. Change them at 100,000 miles.

Check fuel pressure with a gauge. I like to go on a road test
with the gauge taped or tied to the windshield or wiper arm.

Any kind of vacuum leak will cause a problem

Make sure the air filter cover is on correctly

You probably have the speed reminder set to 45mph. It chimes & flashes to let you know you are speeding. It will tell you how to adjust it in your owners manual. If you don't like it set it high eg: 100mph. then it won't happen.

My 2011 Sonata cruise control stops working going down steep hills. The set light goes off. I had it set at 50mph but applied brakes when it increased to 70mph. Dealership says they can find nothing...


going down steep hills will all but over ride a cruise control, since the motor is trying to keep the vehicle slowed to what your desired speed that you set , unfortunately this doesn't always work,, as your speed increases, the motor can't keep the speed reduced, when you apply the brakes, the system shuts off, cruise controls were meant to be used pretty much on long flat surfaces with Low inclines ,,

Of coarse it does. The battery was probably okey. The Alternator has nothing to do, with starting a vehicle,but the solenoid on the starter does.
Pull the starter and put on a new solenoid.

Sounds more like an ignition control or coolant flow problem. Or, a/c fan not coming on with a/c.
Getting the water pump question out of the way, the pump either works or not. If it leaks it will cause an overheat due to coolant loss on flat ground or grades...doesn't matter. If the pump bearing or seal is bad it will still pump, it will just be loose and noisy. Coolant flow through the radiator is also essential...I don't think you have a problem there because generally this happens with less maintained higher mile cars.
A bad map sensor can cause your problem because it changes both ignition timing and fuel mixture, either of which can cause very high temps in combustion chambers especially when under a load. Mass air flow sensor can also do this but usually will cause idle problems. If fan is not on with a/c if the remainder of your cooling system may be enough to maintain decent temp control but cannot do this under a load. A/C turned off removes some load and therefore allow you to get up hills. Operating marginally, you can be pushing some coolant out of the system at times without even knowing it.
Now, about your engine: These engines are in my opinion a very poor design to begin with. Even with the best maintenance and low miles, they don't handle temperatures well. at this point, I'd be concerned that after repeated overheats and near overheats, your head gaskets may have started to fail, even though they were not the cause of the problem.Keep that in mind.
Have the items I mentioned tested. If you finally have the problem solved I suggest you change the thermostat as well...Overheating makes them unreliable.

Engine overheats on Pontiac 2002 GP


Check the catalytic converter. If it is clogged, it will reduce your your power and increase the temp of the car, especially on steep inclines.
