Question about 1997 Ford Mustang Cobra

I am having trouble with my EVAP system. i have power to the cannister purge valve but it will not actuate. if i hook the valve directly to the battery it does.

The purge vavles are controlled by the ECM. It will have power all the time to it and the ecm grounds it out to activate it. The ECM can be checked with a hand held computer, Garage. Also the purge vavle only works under specific engine tempertures and loads.

Is there a fuse for the vent solenoid? getting P0449 code but vent is good.


code p 0449 refers to evaporative emission (EVAP)system, vent valve ---circuit malfunction===causes --wiring ---EVAP cannister purge valve ---ECM
check the wiring for breaks , bad connections
replace the purge valve
the vent valve is part of the purge system of the EVAP system( fuel system)

A loose gas cap or bad gas cap can cause this ,or filling gas tank while it running .or it could be a small leak in the evap system

P1443 - EVAP Control System / Vacuum System Purge Control Solenoid Or Purge Control Valve Fault. A fuel tank pressure change greater than minus (-) 7 inches of water in 30 seconds occurred with a purge (fuel vapor) flow at less than 0.02 pounds per minute.

Possible Causes:
  • Blocked fuel vapor hose between the EVAP canister purge valve and the FTP sensor.
  • Blocked fuel vapor hose between the EVAP canister purge valve and the engine intake manifold.
  • Blocked vacuum hose between the EVAP canister purge valve solenoid and the engine intake manifold.
  • EVAP canister purge valve stuck closed (mechanically).

  • Possible Solution:
    Check for blockages between the fuel tank, the EVAP canister purge valve, and the engine intake manifold. Check for obstructions in the EVAP canister purge valve diaphragm and ports.

    The canister is on the passengers side near the firewall if I recall correctly.

    Code says evaporator purge solenoid


    Which code specifically? Do not assume you need a new solenoid. Our recommendation will depend on the specific code and some troubleshooting results. I usually recommend checking over all the EVAP vacuum lines and the gas cap too whenever there is a purge valve code. Check the vacuum lines at the cannister in the left rear bumper. I will paste info on the purge solenoid below.

    Evaporative Emission Purge Solenoid

    Description & Operation
    The duty cycle EVAP canister purge solenoid (DCP) regulates the rate of vapor flow from the EVAP canister to the intake manifold. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) operates the solenoid.
    During the cold start warm-up period and the hot start time delay, the PCM does not energize the solenoid. When de-energized, no vapors are purged. The PCM de-energizes the solenoid during open loop operation.
    The engine enters closed loop operation after it reaches a specified temperature and the time delay ends. During closed loop operation, the PCM cycles (energizes and de-energizes) the solenoid 5 or 10 times per second, depending upon operating conditions. The PCM varies the vapor flow rate by changing solenoid pulse width. Pulse width is the amount of time that the solenoid is energized. The PCM adjusts solenoid pulse width based on engine operating condition.
    Removal & Installation
    The duty cycle evaporative (EVAP) canister purge solenoid is located in the engine compartment near the brake master cylinder.

    1. Disconnect electrical connector at solenoid.
    2. Disconnect vacuum lines at solenoid.
    3. Lift solenoid slot from mounting bracket for Removal & Installation.

    To Install:
    1. Position solenoid slot to mounting bracket.
    2. Connect vacuum lines to solenoid. Be sure vacuum lines are firmly connected and not leaking or damaged. If leaking, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may be set with certain emission packages.
    3. Connect electrical connector to solenoid.

    Evap error code. how to fix and where can i get diagrams to fix my self


    Basic system is in diagram below. If your code is a leak code, you need to check the gas cap for a good seal and then run down all of the hoses to check for leaks. If your trouble code is a purge solenoid malfunction, replace the purge valve. The EVAP canister is usually mounted in the front corner engine compartment or behind the rear wheel liner. The purge valave will be somewhere between the cannister and the engine along one of the hoses from the cannister. If you can give us the specific code, we can narrow this down a bit for you.     What is a purge valve on a 2000 mazda xl and where is it located?


    When the car is off, gasoline vapors from the fuel tank are absorbed in a charcoal cannister. When the engine is running, vacuum from the intake is directed to the cannister through the purge valve to **** the fumes from the charcoal back into your engine. This keeps the fumes out of the atmosphere. The purge valve is a solenoid controlled by the ECU to open when it thinks the engine can take the extra air. There is a little pump that sucks on the system to check for leaks and it sets a CEL if there is one.

    The purge valve is part of the EVAP emissions control. This is a common failure in Mazdas.
