Question about 1998 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

1 Answer

Alright, so i was out driving the other night and for some reason my accelerator got stuck. i tried pulling back on it and it wasn't doing anything but reving. i had to push on the brakes due to a stop light. when i stopped my truck would just sit there with my tires spinning. i had to turn the truck off and call a friend to help me push it into a parking lot to leave there over night. The next day i go there to start the truck and some reason it was still trying to rev itself. after a few hours of it sitting there turned off. i went to go try to start it again and it ran perfectly normal. i had to get it towed to my house. today i was driving it to go to the gas station and get some gas. it drove fine as long as i just tapped on the gas a lil. on the way back home i pushed on the accelerator and it got stuck again. any idea of what could be going on with it? i discovered the accelerator cable was jammed and was wondering how to fix it or how much it'd cost to get it fixed??

Cables will run $20.00 to $30.00 . They are not hard to replace and there isn't any adjustments when you replace them. there is usually a couple of bolts by the pedal in the firewall to remove and it clips into the throttle bracket. If you want to have a shop do the work, count on the part costing 50% higher and what ever the shop rate is times 1 to 1.5 hours.

My guess is that you have a stuck caliper on your front right brake. It is very easy to tell... The best way is to jack up the car and see if you can rotate the wheel. If you don't have the oomph for that, drive the car for a few miles and then pull into a parking lot. Go put your hand on the hub of the left wheel to see how hot it is. Go to the right side and do the same. If it's hot, you have a stuck caliper.

The reason I think this is the case is that when the car is accelerating, the engine is overpowering the brakes. However, when you stick in the clutch, there is no power to the wheels, and the stuck brake is pulling you to the right.

You should not drive away from your house for 2 miles... go out a mile and back. That way, if it's hot, you are home safe.

If it is a stuck caliper, you should not drive it for many reasons... you are wrecking your brake pads and rotors on that wheel... you are possibly boiling your brake fluid and could have a mushy brake pedal with reduced effectiveness, and plow into someone in front of you... you could wreck your tire... you could start a fire.

If it is not that, have someone run beside your car to see if your wheel looks like it is going to fall off. Not likely, but something to check.

you don't have a choke.
Could be the linkage hanging up for sure.
Have it checked by a pro ASAP.
Although it's kinda easy to replace, its easy to go wrong if you don't know what you are doing and safety should always come first.

2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Shifting

Did you ever get that problem diagnosed? My 2008 Jeep GC recently and frequently gets stuck and does not accelerate past 1st gear. We have to pull over put it into park then shift into D-rive again. Then the transmission accelerates prperly. The only way we knew this was the big trucks on my job site have to do the same thing. A temporary resolve. Hoping it's not the transmission slipping and needing repair.
