Locate the Thermostat

  • Find the hoses that leave your radiator.
  • Trace the top hose back to your engine.
  • Locate the thermostat housing attached at the end of that hose. Verify the location in your owner's manual, as some manufacturers house the thermostat at the bottom of the radiator rather than the top. This makes removal far more difficult.

Replace the Thermostat Locate the clamp that secures the thermostat to the radiator hose. Unscrew this clamp and gently remove it from the engine. You might see radiator fluid or coolant come out of the hose at this stage, in which case you can catch it in a drip pan and dispose of it later on. Unscrew the bolts that secure the thermostat to its housing. Wipe out the inside of the hose with a rag to ensure it is free of debris. If anything falls into your radiator, it can result in expensive repairs. Replace the gasket. Install the new engine thermostat. Make sure the power unit faces the engine. Replace the bolts to secure the thermostat housing to the radiator hose. Reconnect the hose and tighten the screws in the clamp

Follow the top radiator hose from the radiator back to the block. The thermostat is under the connection where the hose meets the block.

Hi, this sounds more like a thermostat issue, since the gage and the heater seem to correlate.
I recommend you replace the thermostat to see if that will solve your problem. If you want to replace the sender, I have pasted a picture below on where to find it. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using Fixya.

Remove hoses from housing, remove 3 bolts, remove thermostat. Note how o-ring is attached/installed. Install new thermostat and o-ring. Make sure spring end of thermostat goes into the engine. Tighten bolts to 80 in-lbs, reattach hoses, refill coolant and purge any air from the system.

2.0 liter engine, thermostat.

Temp sensor; remove connector, use socket to remove sensor. Use teflon tape of water pump seelant on threads of new sensor. Thread the sensor into position and tighten to 10-14 ft lbs. (14-19 Nm) on the 2.5L engine and 89-120 inch lbs. (10-14 Nm) on the 2.0L engine.

How to install 2000 Mercury Mystique trunk strut?


The temp sending sensor is located under thermostat housing assy.
you will need to detatch upper radiator hose detatch 3 thermostat housing bolts to remove the housing just enough to remove the clip holding the sensor . detatch elect. connector.
: don't misplace thermostat housing seal inside housing.
very easy job !

Dead battery on 98 merc mystique. cant shift to


power is needed to move shifter. sometimes the shifter will move if key is off? maybe? some cars have a slot or a way to move shifter if lock doesnt work. Owners manual handy?

Speedo and gas gage went out the same time on 1996 mercury mystique. its not a fuse, what else could it be seeing they both went out the same time?


I HAD A 98 MYSTIQUE OR SHOULD I SAY (MISTAKE).MY HEAT GAUGE , GAS GAUGE , AND SPEEDOMETER WORKED WHEN THEY WANTED TO . NEVER DID FIGURE IT OUT AFTER 3 YEARS. DID FIX MY PROBLEM WITH THE CAR HOWEVER ( I SOLD IT !) THERE AN ELECTRICAL NIGHTMARE.

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the 1999 Cougar . ISSUE: The ignition key may be difficult to insert or remove and/or key chimes may sound with the ignition key removed and driver's door open on some vehicles. This may be caused by internal design characteristics in the ignition lock cylinder increasing insertion/removal efforts which may allow the lock cylinder to stick.
ACTION: Install a revised ignition lock cylinder. The revised ignition lock cylinder should reduce the possibility of high insertion/removal efforts and ensure proper chime function. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
  1. Verify customer concern.
  2. Observe the ignition lock cylinder as the key is removed. If the lock cylinder snaps outward to the non-depressed position and the chimes stop sounding, continue to Step 3. If it does not snap outward, replace the ignition lock cylinder with the appropriate cylinder by referring to the Parts Block in this article.
  3. Insert and remove the ignition key from the lock cylinder. If binding or high efforts are encountered, replace the ignition lock cylinder.
  4. From the Parts Block, select a lock cylinder with a part number suffix identical to the center character of the key code of the vehicle. The suffix must match the center key code character to maintain a single key system.
  5. Install the replacement lock cylinder, by referring to the 1998 Contour/Mystique Workshop Manual, Section 211-05 or the 1999 Cougar Workshop Manual, Section 211-04. NOTE: KEYS INCLUDED WITH NEW IGNITION LOCK CYLINDERS ARE CUT FOR THE IGNITION ONLY. IN ORDER FOR THE KEYS TO FUNCTION IN THE DOOR LOCKS, THE KEYS MUST BE CUT TO THE DOOR CODE OF THE ORIGINAL LOCKSET. THE KEY CODE WILL CHANGE UPON INSTALLATION OF THE REPLACEMENT LOCK CYLINDER (FIGURE 1).

    • Ignition Key-Code-Erase
  2. Disconnect Data Link Connector (DLC).
  3. Cycle the first non-programmed key in the ignition to run position for at least 3 seconds and then turn to the off position.
  4. Cycle the second non-programmed key in the ignition to run position. The theft indicator should prove out for 3 seconds.
  5. Verify the vehicle will now start using both keys.
(2) For Contours/Mystiques with Stand Alone PATS and built before:
  • 2/2/98 Kansas City
  • 2/16/98 Mexico
Using the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester equipped with Service card (green) level 1.0 or higher:
  1. From NGS menu, select:
    • Service Bay Functions
    • PATS
    • Ignition Key-Code-Erase (this process may take up to 8 minutes to complete )

  4. Again cycle first programmed key to run position. Within 15 seconds, remove original key and turn new unprogrammed key to run position. The theft indicator should prove out for 2 seconds. New key will start vehicle.

I have a 98 mercury mystique v6, When I try to start,


just a stab in the dark here. maybe starter drive bad, or starter sellinoid, or the worst case teeth gone on one section of flywheel. i would say its either starter drive or starter sellinoid. either case starter has to be removed. hope this helps. OLD SCHOOL.

NO OVERDRIVE


I had a similar problem with my 98 mystique when i bought it used. I had no overdrive and was lucky to find a honest transmission shop that found the problem. In my case the overdrive was unplugged. They plugged it back in,cleared the computer and changed my tranny fluid and i was good to go. You should be revving about 2400rpm at 65mph. The other thing you can check is to make sure that the wires that go from the overdrive button are not broken off or coroded.
