Question about 2004 Hyundai Elantra

1 Answer

Hello ... My 2004 Hyundai Elantra GLS is having major electrical issues. For the past few days, the radio has periodically "skipped" (i.e. shut off for a second and restarted), the interior dome/door lights seem to flicker, and there is an odd "squeaking" sound when I accelerate. Today, I opened the car and all the normal interior lights came on (door/dome lights), but when I turned the ignition, nothing happened - no engine chug, all lights were off, completely dead. After a couple seconds, the entire system seemed to "reboot," resetting the stereo (clock/presets), clock, dashboard dials, etc. But when I tried to start it again, same problem as before, no action and the lights were off again. Any ideas what the problem might be? The battery was replaced within the past couple months, and I don't drive it extensively. It has about 96K miles on it and like I said, is a 2004 model. Thanks for your help! Steve

Better check the battery as it sure sounds like its dead. The charging system could be at fault also A brand new battery can run down and need a charge if the charging system isnt doing its job Hope this helps you .Good luck!

Thanks, olddodgefan. After some more research, sounds like the alternator could be the problem (i.e., not charging the battery), especially since the battery is only a couple months old.

Any idea how to check to see if the alternator's faulty? Or do I need to take it in to the shop?

If you can, jump start the car. Then when it is running , pull a battery cable off. If the car keeps running the alternator is usually ok. Or get it checked out at a shop. Hope this helps

My 2004 Hyundai Elantra GLS radio, clock and interior lights will not come on

I have the same issue . My radio lights are on but my radio doesn't come on nor does my clock and my interior lights. This issue happened after someone jumped my car battery and put the jumper cables on wrong. I've changed the battery and checked all fuses fortunately all the fuses are good... I called the dealership mech and he told me to check the fuses again. Other wise it could be a wiring issue ...either way I am unsure.

Did you use a aftermarket O2 sensor or a genuine Hyundai one? If it's an aftermarket one it may be bad or not as good as the OEM one. See here for more details and other potential causes: P0133
