The CHECK ENGINE light indicates that your vehicle's computer has detected one of literally dozens of problems that may effect your vehicle's operation, safety, or emissions. The ONLY way to identify the problem is to have the computer read by a VW dealer, auto shop, or auto parts store that has the proper equipment. You will pay for the service at the dealer and most shops, but many major auto parts stores will check the computer at no cost to you. The reader will produce a code that is then looked up to identify the specific problem. Check your local parts stores first, and ask if they are equipped to read/download the computer code(s) on your car.

Check engine light can be due to any problem related to engine. It may be a false trigger due to sensor problem but its always advised not to drive the car with check engine light and contact the service center immediately.

2008 Bmw 128 service engine soon light will not turn off. Drives fine

You have a check light on !!

Surely you know that you have
to check for codes, to even get pointed in
some direction

You don't ever drive more than one day without
checking for codes & if you can't have the car completely
repaired in a week, you don't use it until you can.

2004 Chevy Cavalier engine light and trac off light

One year ago---your check engine light came on
The PO405 code was for an EGR Valve issue
No mention--- if you had that fixed

A Few Days Ago---you get Trac Light on,that is part of
the ABS Braking System
Now that system has to be diagnosed & repaired, not just
continue to use the car, actually make the repair, before
you do some damage or can't stop the car & worse things happen

Changing Trans Fluid---is NOT a FIX for anything, but should
be done on all vehicles every 3 years.

If the Engine Management System isn't working correctly, then
your trans won't work as it should either

You need to be proactive & immediately have any abnormal
operation or check light problems, at least diagnosed in a few days
of noticing them

You need to stop using any car that isn't 100% & have it
repaired as soon as possible.

Not wait weeks or years.
Being 9 years old, the trans may also have it's own issues

A wrench appears and 34a I don't know what that means and I don't have the manual, it happen two days ago. I put engine oil because it showed 15% oil.

That wrench is a maintenance minder indicator lettting you know that your oil's service life is at 15%, not that the level or amount is low. Have your oil changed and have the maintenance minder light reset.

Check engine read out says it's the cat longer warranteed @ 89K is running well......mechanic says there are 2 cat converters on this car - dealer says no, only one -...

Go to a qualified exhaust shop, and have them look at the problem. It isn't hard for them to diagnose problems with catalytic converters. If they tell you the cats are fine, then they are fine. However they will tell you what is the problem. Personally I wouldn't trust either the mechanic or the dealer.

First take this car to advance auto parts they should have a code reader there that reads the OBD II codes so then the codes should tell you want is going on and then come back here to reply the codes.

I am having trouble locating the vacuum hose, and the check engine light goes on and off every other couple of days. Plus I noticed the rpm guage keeps going up and down while at a light

Next time that light comes on, check the code that's popping up. The light is indicating a code, which in turn directs you in the direction of the problem. If you don't have code reader, bring your vehicle to a place like autozone that will check the code for free. Let me know what the code is. Without this, we're just shooting in the dark, with the many different problems that would cause this.

I was code chasing for a long time with mine, (light was intermitent) until I finally bought a code reader myself. Light popped on, I plugged it in and grabbed the code instantly.
