Question about Hyundai Elantra

1 Answer

I have a 2010 Elantra with 6000 miles. Between 30 and 40mph it has some hesitation with acceleration and I really have to put my foot down to get it to accelerate. Why would this happen on a new car? Only does it between 30 and 40mph and usually after I've had to slow down and then accelerate again.

The car only has 6,000 miles on and is under warranty so I'm going to drop it off at a Hyundai dealer, however based on previous experience I know that it's best to have some idea of what it is myself to counter their advice that "it runs fine to us"!

Thanks for the advice, if it was a manual transmission it acts like it's in the wrong gear and needs to go up a gear. Do you have anything else in mind it could be before I take it to the dealer? (As I say I like to be prepared!)

It's an automatic transmission but I don't hear anything. It only happens between 30 and 40mph like it doesn't want to go higher than 30 without me flooring it. It also only happens after I've slowed down and then am accelerating, doesn't happen when moving from a full stop.

Welcome to Fixya

Souns like a fuel delivery problem. Check the Fuel filter or the fuel pump. Replace then if possible. Engione lacks fuel that is why i wont go any further. It would be better of you get a scan tool end provide me the error code that you will be getting.

Your response will be highly appreciated.

Thank you for using Fixya!

if you can shift into gears freelyup to 5th gear but the car hesitate to go fas,t then this is not a transmission problem. Unless you are hearing something while shifting.

based on what you have said. i dont see any transmission problem there. i am pretty much sure the this has something to do with fuel delivery problem. if you have a friend who has a scan tool. borrow it and scan you car. provide me the code so that we can determine whats causing the issue.

My question: what can cause the car to do this?

I assume the car you are talking about is your 1968 Dodge Dart GTS with a 4-speed manual transmission. The engine has a special camshaft, Chrysler P/N 312044, which has a 60 degree overlap in the valve timing, since the engine is built to rev in excess of 6,000 RPM. The problem with your car is obviously a leaky accelerator pump. Why don't you get a car that (1) does not have to run on premium gas (because of its 10.5:1 compression ratio), and (2) uses fuel injectors instead of a wild 4 barrel carburetor made for 1/4 mile drag racing? I happen to know that that is the car you are referring to, because you did NOT say that it WASN'T!

Why is it hesitant at aceleration?

could be a number of things , have the OBD codes read as will tell you if there is a faulty sensor/switch. I would put a fuel addative in when you next fill up as this will clear any carbon build up etc that can cause this type of issue , get one that cleans the catalytic convertor as well as the valves , fuel injectors etc ,follow the makers instructions, this is a quick and cheap maintenance programme that i use regulary every 10k miles

1989 Acura Integra that hesitates after driving.

Sounds a lot like your spark plaugs / leads are havign some trouble conducting.

Spark plugs and leads sound be changed every 12500 miles (spark) / 40000 miles (leads).

If they are nearing the end of their life you will get this hesitation.

Also a good thing to check is your distributor cap. I had a similar issue with my integra where it would bunny hop unless i absolutely planted my foot down.

I pulled off the distributor cap and cleaned the pins on the inside of the cap (flat head screw driver and scrapped away all of the built up carbon) Once i had done that (and replaced my leads and plugs the car went back to smooth riding all of the time.
