Question about 2000 Jaguar S-Type

1 Answer

Hi, I was cruising on the Motorway yesterday, when out of the blue My 1999 Jaguar 4.0 V8 started a serious mis-fire. Up to this point there had been no mis-fire and the tick over was smooth. The seriousness of the mis-fire meant it was more than 2 cyclinders. The AA was duly called and the mechanic diagnosed all 4 cylinders on the Passenger side were not firing. Current was getting to the coil packs which have been replaced recently and no unusual noises from the engine. Any ideas what can cause a whole rail to go down like this? When I restarted the engine from cold the mis-fire seemed to be worse than ever. The diagnostics didn't throw up any errors at all.

If a whole side has failed, as much as I hate to say it, the ECM/PCM has failed. More specifically the "drivers" for the injectors and should also fire spark. Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks iambanshee74, you sound pretty confident with the answer, any other possible solutions that can be looked into first? Also what sort of cost would a PCM run at and can it be plugged straight in or would it need specialist tools? Sorry for all the questions.

Pretty confident especially if they hooked up a scanner and nothing came back. Here is a link I found on E-bay and the computer is about $80.... so actually pretty good. Don't appologize for the questions. That's what I'm here for. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jaguar-S-...

How can I clear the misfire on #4 cylinder code?

If you have not repaired the #4 mis-fire problem then re-setting or clearing the code will only last until the mis-fire is detected again (maybe only minutes or even seconds depending how bad the mis-fire is), and then the MIL (malfunction indicator light) will be right back on. Try changing the #4 spark plug and ignition wire first, if this does not solve the problem then there might be something more seriously wrong with your engine.

If you do not have a scanner to reset the MIL, then you can reset the MIL by dis-connecting the battery for three minutes and then re-connect the battery, and all of the data trouble codes should be cleared.

My 1999 Jag XJ8 did the same thing when the cruise control was activated (red button by the gear shift), but I wasn't actually using the cruise control. I deactivated the cruise control and the fail safe message no longer appears.

Special tools are required, you CANNOT do this at home. Take it to a shop that does Jaguar work. If you dont know what you are doing, serious engine damage will result.
