It is possible that the a/c relay is not working, but the most common cause, especially for a car over 10 years old, is loss of refrigerant. When the refrigerant pressure drops too low, an interlock prevents the compressor from running.

You will need to determine what type of refrigerant your Caddy uses since it is a 1993. This was the cutoff year for R-12 refrigerant, which is now banned. Only a licensed a/c shop can recharge an R-12 A/C system, and it is expensive.

Some R-12 systems can be converted to run with R-134a, which is available to the public. The conversion must also be done by a licensed shop, because R-12 may not be released into the atmosphere due to environmental laws- it must be reclaimed and recycled.

If your Caddy uses R-134a, you are in luck, because you can recharge this system yourself, and it is easy and inexpensive to do.

I highly recommend that you start out with a leak check kit, available at any decent auto supply store. It comes with a can of specially treated fluorescent R-134a. After you add the refrigerant (the included instructions with the kit will walk you step by step through the process), you use the included UV penlight and special enhancing glasses to visually find any leaks that may be in your system. The can of refrigerant also contains additives that can seal most small leaks.

As you add refrigerant (following the included instructions, which will tell you to set your A/C on MAX), when the system pressure gets high enough (satisfying the low pressure interlock), the A/C compressor will kick on. Depending on how low the pressure was, you may require another can of 134a to completely fill the system.

Once everything is back up and running, enjoy your A/C! For the first few days, use your light pen and glasses to check for any leaks. Most times, the sealants in recharge can will take care of things for you.

Good Luck, and Thank You for using FixYa!

I would suspect the AC compressor cycling switch (located in low pressure line from compressor) or a AC cutoff wide open throttle relay ( in under hood fuse and relay center) would be causing this problem.

1992 Dodge Dakota 2wd 3.9L V6 Air conditioning/Heater dosent blow? when i turn the air or the heat on i can hear the compressor kick on but it dosen't blow cold or hot? any help would be appreciated

Roger it sounds like the blower motor is not comming on. There is a resistor network located in the engine compartment on the passenger side mounted to the firewall, that controlls the blower motor. The connections may have corroted or the unit itself is bad. That was the first thing I had to relpace when I got my used 92 Dakota. There is also a 30 amp fuse in the fuse box under the dash board . If that is blown I would suspect the blower motor is seized up or just pulling too much power.

If the AC compressor is kicking in and out then you are probably low on freon. If the Compressor isn't kicking in at all then the problem could be a fuse or relay in the Power distribution box or the fuse in the interior of the car. If the fuse and relays are good then the problem could be a bad clutch on the compressor or a bad compressor itself. If the compressor is kicking in and out then get a freon refill can from Walmart or an Auto parts store and add freon to the system until the compressor kicks in continuously.

There is a power distrobution box under the hood containing relays and a few heavy duty fuses.
I'd take the cover off and find the A/C relay usually depicted in the diagram inside the cover.
Start the car, turn the A/C switch on and then under hood at A/C relay give it a light tap with the handle of a screwdriver to see if compressor clutch on compressor "kicks on".
Relay can even be pulled out and put back in to make a better connection.
I'm betting the problem is that relay...or dirty contacts.

Hope this helps...

the vehicle is equipped with a pressure transducer. the pressure transducer relays info to the ECM to turn the compressor on, the cooling fans on by letting the ECM know how much pressure is in the lines. the problem is it can go bad and show high pressure (over 4 volts) to the ECM and not allow the a/c to work.

If you were low on freon before, It's possible you have a leak in your system. If you take it back, have them check for the leak before they let you drive off with another freon loss.
Good luck...
