Question about Toyota MR2

1 Answer

Toyota 1990 MR2 Engine 3SGE. Model E-SW20-AJPQF Power steering : When the ignition key is turned on first stage, all the red lights show up on the dashboard, which is normal. When the engine is started all the red lights go out which is normal. After about ten seconds, the "PS" red light reappears. Listening in the engine bay, there is some noise coming from near the p/s pump. This noise increases more after a few minutes. When the car is moving steering is also harder to operate.

Thanks for comment about the relay. I shall have that checked out.

With the slightly rattly noise coming from near the p/s pump, could it be worn out, and also be a possible cause of the steering gear being hard to operate when the car is moving ?

Thanks for your comment Tony. Yes the oil level in the reservoir was the first thing checked and was OK and no leakage of oil.

  • A common issue with these cars is the power steering relay. It's located under the hood on the passenger side in the relay panel box. These do cost quite a bit so you may shop around. Avoid the dealership at all cost.
  • Check the Power Steering fluid level as well. Make sure the level is good.
  • Please note also the MR2 came out in 1991. if you look on the sticker on the inside of the drivers door while it may say 1990 it was manufactured after August which means when looking for parts you will indicate 1991 as the year (or use the VIN #)

    • Yes it sure can. If the Power Steering Pump goes bad the bearing will begin to grind something awful. It will sound like a metal mash. And the steering will become harder as well. It will increase until almost ear piercing. At that point it is ready to lock up. This would also be something to possibly look at. How is the level in your PS reservoir?

    Tony

    • Your welcome.

    • OK so no leaks is a good thing. So now we want to look at the relay and possibly a replacement of the Power Steering Pump. Tell me when you are in your car and the engine is running turn your wheel all the way to one side and hold it. Now back all the way to the other way and hold it, just two seconds each time. Did the pump whine real bad whaaan whaaan. It might do it maybe just a very small amount but a pump going bad will do it a louder. Try the relay and see if that helps. The relay can give the illusion of a bad pump. It is one of the other.

    Regards,

    Tony

    • Sorry about that. What I mean is replace the old relay with a new Power Steering Relay and see if this helps. The Power Steering Relay is under the hood on the passenger side of the vehicle in a black box which is called a relay panel box. There will be a few relays in this box. On the underside of the lid you will see a diagram of each relay. You Power Steering light being lit up on your dash is a big indicator that this relay is malfunctioning. Most reports are when this relay malfunctions the steering is only minorly harder to turn. If the light was not on the I would lean towards the Power Steering Pump itself. See what a new relay does for you. I am thinking this will fix your problem.

    Tony

The relay just pulls right up and you push the new relay in place. It is that simple for you to do. No need to pay someone to do it :)

Can you tell what fault code 12 is on a toyota mr2 mk2 sw20 3s ge engine

12 is not a fault code it is the code that tells the user the computer is in read mode of computer diagnostic's. so if the only thing it flashes is 12 then you have no fault codes stored.

How do you ajust the power steering drive belt on a 2001 Toyota Altezza 3SGE Beams engine?

More than likely you can't adjust it. Most late model cars have a belt tensioner that isn't adjustable. If you are having trouble with it squeeling you could try some belt dressing or probably just replace the belt since it is more than likely the issue.

Key won't turn on ognition

If the key is stuck in your ignition, try turning your steering wheel hard in both directions while twisting your key gently in both directions. The steering wheel lock may be putting back pressure on your ignition switch causing it to bind and this in-turn stops you from being able to turn your key.

If you can slide your key in and out of your ignition, then your key may be worn and the cylinder cannot be twisted by the humps on the key...check to see if your key shows signs of wear...ie. shinny sides and deep marks. If this is the case you will have to have keys made for your car. It may be easy to do if you have T-Tops, you can take a top off and bring it to a lock smith. They can make a key to fit your ignition in about an hour and it should cost about $25-$35. I had to have that doen for my 1991 MR2. Hope this helps!
