Possibly wiring issues

When I bought the vehicle, the "check engine soon light" has been on consistently and I have had several issues with keeping the brake lights all working @ the same time for a while now. However, recently, the "check engine" light stopped staying on consistently and has gone off quite often. Last night though, the van seemed to be running fine, I went into church and when I came out, the battery was dead. We jump started it with cables and then the dash lights were flickering off and on and the ABS light and battery light came on and stayed on, it seemed like it was going to keep running but when we stopped @ a light everything went off and we heard clicking in the fuse box under the hood and in the ignition. We pushed the van to the side and had a friend come jump start us again and he followed us home but when we came out to get our stuff out of the van this am the lights were really dim like the battery was completely drained and I used the electric lock to unlock it and relock it, then the locks sounded like some one was just locking & relocking it continually.

With the indulgence of ginko.

I have to agree on your supposition that the current problem is an electrical, however, the initial "check engine soon light" indicates engine/mechanical problems.

The first corrective move would then be to restore the car to that initial state and thereafter work on the "check engine soon light".

Course of action suggested:

  • have the battery fully recharge externally;
  • on placing back the battery, pls note if there will be some sparking when the last terminal touches the battery post. If yes then you have a short. If the spark is strong, then it is along the main/always ON B+12, if it is slight, then it is a partial short and could be in any of the harness, connector, load. If none, then the possibility of a short is low;
  • flickering dashboard/warning lights, relays clicking, and other electrical issues could possibly be the alternator not charging the battery when the engine is running. If the battery/charge warning light is not lit, then chances are it is either the battery is not accepting any charge and/or the terminal for the alternator's output is not connected correctly (might be loose or corrosion) to the + terminal of the battery;
  • another to check would be the fusible link that is connected to the + terminal of the battery that goes through a connector to the main harness leading to the fuse box. This wire is smaller than the big cable that goes to the starter motor. In some instances, the connector might be corroded;
  • it wold also be suggested to check the grounding cable both to the engine and to the chassis/body of the vehicle;
  • the fuse/relay box would also be suspect specially the terminals and connectors.
After the aforementioned has been attended to and eliminated, then the the car's computer could be scanned for possible engine problems.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Car computer unit must be connected to a code reader to see what is wrong.

    Also test a replacement battery, when battery is faulty it does not keep charge.
    If replacing battery does not fix it, then it is possible that you have a problem with alternator, check that serpentine belt running alternator is in tension.
    If it is not battery or alternator than it may be a short, in this case it may be difficult to find out where circuit is shorting, probably it will be necessary to call a mechanic.

    The electric locks locking on and off by themselves indicate a possible contact in lock circuit. If you find electric lock relay try replacing it and see if you keep getting the problem.

Can not read error on emc

First I suggest to check fuses; keep in mind that the OBD-II port didn't work because the power wire in the connector corroded and didn't have a connection anymore. No power equals no OBD worked.
