Well first is the check engine light on. Egr will set a code if it is working or not. Possible cat but could be a front O2 sensor causing the vehicle to run too rich. The best thing is to run a scan to see if there are any codes and they can see if the O2 sensors are work and even check the Mass Air Flow sensor too. Good luck.

hey the check engine light isnt on but a friend did scan and saw a code for the egr however, when he pressed the button to open the egr it stalled..wich apparently means its working...the cat seems fine.. from what i remember it will rattle when u bang on it...so you think front 02 sensor?

It is possible that the O2 sensor is not working to full capacity. It could be possible that the internals of the cat are bad. It should not rattle when you bang on it, except for the heat shield some. The internals of the cat are form fitted and over the years they will burn up and not work at burning the excess CO that is coming out. I would venture to say that the cat is more than likely your problem. A bad O2 sensor normally will cause a check engine light but if it is reading at the end of it's parameters it won't and can give false information to the computer. I would suggest removing the exhaust from the cat towards the back of the vehicle and look inside the cat to see if the honeycomb material looks good or if it is burned up. Good luck and let me know.

Buy yourself a auto fault meter that you plug in the port inside the car. You will find this will put out any warning lkights that are not dangerous and will identify any that need attention.

High nox on emmission but no engine codes

Check for a vacuum leak by doing a smoke test and see where the smoke is pulled into the vacuum line.

95 chevy s10 wont pass etest,, nox too high

Scanned the ECU and confirm us what fault code is stored there; sound like a sensor need to be replaced.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

SMOG test passed ALL except "NOx" results were 696 Limit is 585. Any easy fixes ??

I've had good luck using CRC's "Guaranteed to pass" fuel system cleaner. Follow the directions exactly. It should bring all the smog numbers down--perhaps get your NOx number low enough.

If the EGR valve is not working properly, it will lead to high NOx. Check for a leaky vacuum diaphragm on this valve. It will not only keep the EGR from working when it should, but also lead to a lean mixture that burns hotter, thus generating even more NOx.

Check for vacuum leaks. Any extra air that makes the mixture lean will contribute to high combustion temperatures and high NOx--even if the EGR valve is working.

Finally, if those steps don't work, it could be your catalytic converter is getting old and inefficient. Don't be surprised if you need a new 'cat.

Lots of carbon in the cylinders,EGR valve not working,a dirty or leaking fuel injector,to far advanced timing.

Run 2 cans of fuel injector in 1/2 tank of gas and run it as low as you can before refueling.

I would set the timing back 5 degrees and test again, put it into service mode (check engine light on) if you have to to get timing back to cool combustion for the test.

This should lower the no% and the co% may just pass too.

Do not use premium fuel ( which is just slower burning fuel) when doing etests,or for normal driving if your engine does not require it,
It will cause carbon deposits in the combustion chamber and it will almost always give higher readings when etesting.

Did you change the air filter. The fuel filter will have no impact on emmision's but the air filter is a very common problem. If you usually drive it at low rev.'s then before you send it for emmisions test you will need to put it in a low gear and floor it for about a mile the reason is when it is being tested the engine is reved up to around 3500 rpm and any build up of unburned fuel or oil in the exhaust system will put up the emmisions reading.

check the engine coolant temp sensor, if the sensor is failing it will read always cold and not turn the fan on, if everything else looks and tested ok try the ECTS (engine coolant temp sensor)
