Have a delcotron alternator ,what to know where no.1 terminal and no.2terminal wire goes it is on my 1946 cj2a jeep my amp hand does not show a charge had alternator checked out and is ok

  • Use a wrench to remove the negative and positive battery cables: They are clearly labeled "+" and "-." Always remove the negative cable first, as this isolates the power to the metal parts of your car. Tuck the cables away from the battery as you don't want them to accidentally touch a battery terminal when you're wiring your alternator.

    Locate the alternator terminals. There are two: one marked "live," "pos" or "+" and the other marked "neg," "field" or "-."

    Locate the two cables. The positive (red) cable goes to your battery via a wire loom or harness. The negative (black) cable attaches to a metal part of your car.

    Check how the cables attach to the alternator terminals. Some connect using eyelets that hook over the terminal and tighten with a bolt; others connect by inserting the wire under the terminal and tightening a bolt.

    Loosen the two bolts using a suitable-sized wrench or, if the cables connect using eyelets, remove the bolts.

    Insert the exposed end of the negative (black) cable under the loosened bolt on the negative terminal of the alternator, then tighten the bolt. If the cable has an eyelet, hook it over the terminal and screw the bolt back in place and tighten using a wrench.

    Insert the exposed end of the positive (red) cable under the loosened bolt on the positive terminal of the alternator, then tighten the bolt. If the cable has an eyelet, hook it over the terminal and screw the bolt back in place and tighten using a wrench.

    Replace the positive battery cable on the positive battery terminal using a wrench. Replace the negative battery cable on the negative battery terminal.

    What you have doesn't sound quite right, nor does the advice you are getting, though I don't think it would cause a short either.
    I think the right way depends on what you want the amp gage to measure. If you want it to read the total output of the generator, you have to connect everything in the car to the other side (opposite from the generator wire). On the other hand, if you just want it to measure what current is going to the battery, then you put the accessory wires on the same side as the wire from the generator. I have made 2 diagram below. A volt meter is easy, and you can have both, if you like. A voltmeter just goes straight to the battery terminals if you want to know for sure that you are charging. You can use plain ground and the alternator wire, but then if there is a fusible link from there to the battery you are not always sure the voltage is getting to the battery.     the large wire is the "hot" output that goes to the larger lug on the backside of the alternator...be sure to remove the ground battery cable before attempting any repairs/replacement of the electrical system as to not cause a short...the other smaller diameter wires should be self explanetary, they are usually inserted into a plug which fastens to the side or rear of the alternator....that unit is called a "Delcotron Alternator" which has an internal voltage regulator built into it, refere to this type of alternator when replacing the unit.

    There is probably a weak diode in the alternator; this will cause the battery to drain slowly and will often not turn on the indicator on the dashboard.
    If you want to get your hands dirty, remove the negative battery cable first (always!) Remove the heavy lead from the alternator terminal that goes to the positive terminal of the battery. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
    If the car starts mornings, a bad alternator is pretty much confirmed but you can't drive real far with no alternator to charge the battery.
    Any chain auto parts store will test your alternator free but I don't know if that is in or out of the car.
    BTW, you can buy a digital meter for under $20 many places today and most will have a 10 ampere range that will allow you to check for a current drain of the kind you now have which is probably under the 10 amps.
    One final item; recently the courtesy light switch on the passenger side rear door of my wife's Jeep recently decided to not quite reach anymore and the battery was drained twice before I noticed that 'door ajar' light was telling us that in advance. Even an amp or two will drag a battery down given time.

    How do you connect alternator wires to the starter


    There is only one wire common to the alternator and starter and this is the main+ wire which goes from the alternator down to the main feed terminal of the starter solenoid from there it runs to the battery + terminal.If you are replacing the cable use one of the same diameter......

    Wires mixed on alternator


    If you can give me color of wires you have. My manual is showing about 10 different combinations, depending on whether it has electric choke, idiot light or gauge, ammeter in dash etc. Main wires are Orange, or orange with light blue stripe, goes to FLD on alternator, white with black stripe goes to STA on alternator, and BAT terminal should have a black cable from battery. Be careful, there in case someone changed it to red or another colour , just be sure it's coming from battery, and it may have wire from reulator joined into it.It also shows a ground from regulator to alternator too, so just in case it's black too, don't mix those 2 up.
    This may do it, but if not, get back to me.

    Missing a wire off the alternator plug. only has 1 wire in the plug?I don't know where the other wire goes? It is mising completely?


    There is a big red wire the power wire goes on the big post and the other two goes in the terminal which plugs into the end of the alternator. If one is already there then the other one goes next to it. It must have come out of the terminal.
