Question about Volkswagen Cabrio

1 Answer

My car is a VW Cabrio 2000 The fan used to stay on for a couple of minutes once the car was turned off, but it stopped doing it a couple of months ago. The car overheats when driven over a steep hill, not much but then I have to reduce speed to make sure it doesn't go too far. Changed the Thermostat about a year ago, so not sure what it is. I guess the fan is not working at all and that's why it happens, how can I know if it's the fan or another element?

Yes, got it, there's housing for two of them but there's actually only one there. It's in good shape though.
I'm gonna pull and reinsret the relay now, will update.
    Thanks so much!

The most common problem I have found with the fans are the relays, not that they are bad, but they loose connection. Same with all of the fuses. Corrosion causes alot of resistance and drops the voltage supply. Try pulling and reinserting the relays and fuses first. let me know because there are other factors. Randy

Are the fuses in teh fuse box? Or is there another placing for the Fan's fuses?

  • Randy Ohler May 17, 2011

There is usually 1 fuse for the fans. most are 30 amp (green) fuses. They are a ground fuse. They are with the relays in the relay box under the hood.

Did the pulling and reinsert of the Relay and I'll see now if it works. About the fuses, there's room for two of them, but there's only one there, a 20amp one. In the metallic strip that goes from one screw to the other, it says 30amp. SHould I add another fuse there? or change it to 30amp instead of 20amp? The fuse is in good condition though.
    THanks!!

I need a complete fuse box diagram of a 2002 VW cabrio. My blinkers don't work and there seems to be a lot of things going on with the electrical.

This sounds much like bad connections somewhere, and possibly at the battery. Is the battery fully charged and always starts well? Are all body grounds clean and tight? You are losing juice somewhere. Can you use jumper wires and amp gauge to test at the flasher?

I HAVE A 1998 VW CABRIO with left blinker issues

Ok I fixed her light issue after investigating strange noises under the hood. The wiring harness mount holding clip between the frame and radiator fans at the hood latch broke and the wiring was rubbing against the fan, cutting 3 wires and exposing 4 others. electrical taped frays and made jumpers for the cut ones and WHALLAH! All good. The reason it evaded so long is it was about out of plain sight because of the shroud until it broke the main holding clip and dropped the cluster of wires and the big connector down it wasnt loud.

It actually supposed to work like this. It should turn off in a couple of minutes. Give it a try. Wait for like 10 min to see if it will stop.
