Yeah, I towed it hoem and it still made a noise all the way home, put the clutch in and it went away, but also came back, The gearbox seems okay, I was wondering if its the gear that drives the CV axles? drive etc? I will have a look this weekend and try and find the problem, Its a sort of grinding but jumpity sound, maybe clutch, if I put the clutch in the gears still go into gear, but it doesnt engage the drivetrain... doesn't move makes a sort crunching sound...
    Many thanks

My ford festiva makes a loud whining road noise. Recently the gearbox was changed, and 3 months before that the lhs front wheel bearing was replaced. Any ideas what the problem is?

that has all the hallmarks of a faulty or worn wheel bearing. Run the car on the road, come home and jack up all 4 wheels. Spin them and see if they feel rough, hold the top and bottom of the tyre and see if you get movement in and out.

The trick with replacing wheel bearings, is to tighten down whilst spinning the wheel until it locks up, and then release, if i remember correctly a quarter turn. Locking it up makes sure the bearing is fully seated. If not, they become very loose in a short time and the rollers in the bearing start to shatter. Ruined two before I was told that trick by the parts store.

5-spdt M/T. Why has it stopped shifting into reverse?

Firstly check if you have gearbox oil in it seldomly so happens that a gearbox makes a noise but when it does make a kind of winding noise the gear inside the box has gotten damaged. Sometimes when lucky if you add gearbox oil the noise goes away.

Hi my rx8 is makin a grinding noise from the gearbox and the noise goes away wen foot is pressed on the clutch makes a noise wen drivin in 1st 2nd 3rd n 4th gear noise goes in 5th and the noise is there in...

What?! Really! The noise goes when the clutch pedal is depressed! So the noise goes when the release bearing (throw-out bearing) is engage? So how would that be a release bearing/clutch problem? If it didn't make a noise until the clutch pedal was depressed, it would be the release bearing! In other words its the input shaft bearing and/or counter shaft bearing in the gearbox. Stop giving people bad advice

I have a 2005 Ford focus. I first noticed a rumbling noise which seems to be coming from the front drivers side wheel. If I turn left the noise dies down but I'm not convinced its the wheel bearing. It has...

I have the same problem. I had five new bearings fitted ... one on each wheel and one on the long drive shaft. The noise is now ten times worse so I would guess a faulty "new" bearing being fitted. Ford say that it can only be the final drive bearings in the gearbox now which means an exchange gearbox (not expensive ... around £350 - £400) but add labour and fitting a new clutch while the opportunity is there, I'm giving £700 a nasty look. If I am in neutral with engine running, the noise is not there. If I coast out of gear (with clutch in or out), the noise is there ... can only be the wheel bearings or gearbox driveshaft bearings.

Got on E-Bay a cheap 1987 Honda Civic CRX w/5speed Manual Transmission....Car runs great except when you drive down the road no matter what gear you are in a loud grinding noise comes from what I have been...

Have you checked the wheel bearings for play or roughness? If they're OK i'd suggest gearbox differential bearings. If they're that bad you'll find metal filings or swarf in the gearbox oil. Most *** cars have a magnetic oil drain plug.
